This document specifies requirements that can be used for determining the conformance of systems that produce a hard-copy validation print, directly from digital data, which is intended to simulate the expected appearance of material printed in accordance with a characterized printing condition. It is not intended for use in determining the conformance of production printing systems (digital or conventional) since many aspects of production printing are not covered in this document.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12647-8:2021 - Graphic technology - Process control for the production of half-tone colour separations, proof and production prints - Part 8 - defines requirements and test methods for validation print processes produced directly from digital data. A validation print is a hard-copy visualization intended to simulate the expected appearance of a production print but with less stringent requirements than an ISO 12647-7 contract proof. This second edition (2021) updates colour-difference metrics, adds modern uniformity measurement methods and aligns substrate categorization with other parts of ISO 12647.
Keywords: ISO 12647-8:2021, validation print, graphic technology, proofing, color management, PDF/X, printing process control.
Key Topics and Technical Requirements
- Scope and purpose: Defines conformance criteria for systems that produce validation prints (not for judging production printing systems).
- Data input: Validation print systems shall accept PDF/X files (ISO 15930 series). OutputIntent and DestOutputProfile keys in PDF/X are used for intended printing condition and conversion.
- Substrate qualification: Validation print substrates should be characterized for permanence and, ideally, match production substrates where possible.
- Colour and tone requirements:
- Colouration and colour fidelity criteria (modern ΔE formulae adopted in 2021).
- Tone reproduction limits, reproduction of vignettes, image resolving power.
- Short- and long-term repeatability and print stabilization periods to ensure consistent results.
- Physical properties: Requirements for ink set gloss, permanence (lightfastness), and margin/registration information.
- Measurement and test methods:
- Spectral and colorimetric measurement (reference to ISO 13655).
- Uniformity assessment using 1D distortion metrics with scanning spectrophotometers (ISO/TS 18621-21).
- Gloss measurement (ISO 2813) and additional control strips and test objects defined.
- Conformance and annexes: Normative Annex A provides technical requirements for conformity; additional annexes cover durability, surface gamut patches and fluorescence categorization.
Practical Applications
- Producing cost-effective proof prints for early-stage review (design, layout, concept approval).
- Ensuring consistent visualizations across different sites and devices in a color-managed workflow.
- Providing a standardized specification for proofing houses, in-house design teams, print buyers, and prepress operators who need a repeatable validation print process without the complexity/cost of contract proofs.
Who should use this standard
- Prepress specialists, proofing service providers, print buyers, graphic designers, and color management engineers who require standardized validation print workflows and data-handling practices (PDF/X).
Related Standards
- ISO 12647 series (especially ISO 12647-1 and ISO 12647-7)
- ISO 15930 (PDF/X series)
- ISO 13655 (spectral measurement)
- ISO 2813 (gloss measurement)
- ISO/TS 18621-21 (uniformity measurement)
- ISO 12640-1 (CMYK standard image data)
Using ISO 12647-8:2021 helps organizations standardize validation-proof quality, improve communication between stakeholders, and reduce risk in the print production workflow.
