ISO 12781-1:2011 defines the terms and concepts related to flatness of individual complete integral features only.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12781-1:2011 - "Geometrical product specifications (GPS) - Flatness - Part 1: Vocabulary and parameters of flatness" - defines the terms, concepts and parameters used to describe flatness of individual complete integral features. It is a general GPS standard that focuses on the vocabulary and measurable parameters for flatness (not on the full specification operators - see Part 2). The standard covers digital “extracted surfaces,” the effect of filters on a flatness surface, and reference-plane conventions used when reporting flatness measurements.
Key topics
- Scope: Applies only to individual complete integral features (flatness of an integral feature).
- Extracted surface & flatness surface: The real surface is represented digitally (extracted surface); an additional filter (e.g., Gaussian, spline, wavelet or morphological) can produce the flatness surface to which parameters apply.
- Reference plane conventions:
- Minimum zone reference planes (MZ) - two parallel planes with least separation (outer and inner planes; mean plane is their arithmetic mean).
- Least squares reference plane (LS) - plane minimizing the sum of squared local deviations.
- Flatness parameters:
- Peak-to-valley flatness deviation (FLTt) - largest positive plus absolute largest negative local deviation (defined for all reference planes; MZ commonly used).
- Peak-to-reference (FLTp) and reference-to-valley (FLTv) deviations - defined relative to least squares reference plane.
- Root-mean-square flatness deviation (FLTq) - RMS of local deviations relative to least squares plane (mathematical formula provided).
- Measurement & filtering: The standard notes the influence of data extraction and additional filtering on definitions and requires filters/conventions to be stated unambiguously. It does not disallow any means of measuring flatness.
- Informative annexes: mathematical definition of tolerance zone, synoptic tables of terms/abbreviations/parameters, and relationship to the GPS matrix model.
Applications
- Defining and interpreting flatness tolerances on engineering drawings and inspection reports.
- Specifying measurement/reporting conventions for metrology laboratories, quality departments, and CAD/CAM engineers.
- Ensuring consistent communication between design, manufacturing and inspection teams for flat parts, machined surfaces, plates, and faces of components where planar form is critical.
Who uses this standard?
- Metrologists and inspection engineers
- Mechanical design engineers and tolerancing specialists
- Quality assurance teams in manufacturing (automotive, aerospace, precision machining)
- Calibration and testing laboratories
