ISO 12858-1:2014 specifies the most important requirements of Invar levelling staffs used in geodesy and industry for precise measurement of heights in combination with either an optical-mechanical level equipped with a parallel plate micrometre, or a digital level of comparable precision. It is applicable to classical staffs with graduation lines and numbering and staffs used in digital levelling with code patterns. ISO 12858-1:2014 is not applicable to the detailed design and construction of Invar levelling staffs (e.g. materials, handles, fixing points for the struts, fixing of the Invar strip and of the circular level), which may be selected by the manufacturer as appropriate.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 12858-1:2014 (Invar levelling staffs)
ISO 12858-1:2014 specifies the principal requirements for Invar levelling staffs used with geodetic and industrial levelling instruments. The standard covers staffs intended for precise height measurement when used with an optical-mechanical level (with a parallel-plate micrometer) or a digital level of comparable precision. It applies to both classical staffs (graduation lines and numbering) and staffs for digital levelling (code patterns). ISO 12858-1 does not prescribe detailed construction choices (materials, handles, fixing points), leaving those to manufacturers.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Designed for precise geodetic and industrial height surveying; applies to classical and code-pattern staffs.
- Nominal lengths: Invar levelling staffs are normally manufactured in 2 m or 3 m nominal lengths (other lengths permitted).
- Invar scale strip classification: The Invar strip carrying the scale is classified by thermal-expansion characteristics (classes A, B, C).
- Scale quality and accuracy: Scales may be single or double sets; markings must be sharp, parallel and high-contrast. Scale accuracy is classified (A/B/C) with admissible deviations detailed in the standard’s table for scale class.
- Digital code patterns: Staffs for digital levels use sequences of code patterns; admissible deviations for code-pattern scales are aligned with the same accuracy classes.
- Zero-point error: The zero-point error, measured at 20 °C perpendicular to the baseplate, shall not exceed 0.05 mm. Provision for adjustment is required.
- Baseplate requirements: Lower side fitted with a hardened stainless-steel plate; flatness deviation ≤ 0.02 mm and perpendicularity to the staff axis within ±5′.
- Accessories and ergonomics: Handles, fittings for struts, optional centring ring and heat-insulating handle materials are recommended.
- Circular level: A circular level with an indicating range of 15′ ± 5′ is fixed to the back of the staff.
- Marking and identification: Manufacturer name/trademark and serial number must be marked; example designation format is provided.
Applications and users
ISO 12858-1 is directly relevant to:
- Surveyors and geodetic engineers performing precision levelling
- Manufacturers and designers of levelling staffs and surveying accessories
- Instrument calibration and metrology laboratories
- Procurement/specification writers for surveying equipment in construction, engineering, and infrastructure projects
Use cases include precision height-difference surveys, calibration checks of levelling systems, and procurement/specification of compatible staffs for optical or digital levels.
