ISO 12932:2013 specifies quality levels of imperfections in laser-arc hybrid welded joints for all types of steel, nickel and its alloys. It applies to material thickness ≥0,5 mm. Three quality levels are given in order to permit application for a wide range of welded fabrication. They are designated by B, C and D. Quality level B corresponds to the highest requirement on the finished weld. The quality levels refer to production quality and not to the fitness-for-purpose of the product manufactured.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12932:2013 - Welding - Laser-arc hybrid welding of steels, nickel and nickel alloys - Quality levels for imperfections - defines production quality criteria for imperfections in laser‑arc hybrid welded joints. Published by ISO in 2013 (first edition), this standard applies to steels, nickel and nickel alloys with material thicknesses ≥ 0.5 mm. It provides a clear, standardized framework to assess and classify welding imperfections for routine fabrication, inspection and procurement.
Key technical topics and requirements
- Quality levels: Three graded quality levels are specified - B, C and D. Level B represents the most stringent requirement on the finished weld. These levels address production quality and are not a direct statement of fitness‑for‑purpose.
- Scope and materials: Applies to laser‑arc hybrid welding of all steels, nickel and nickel alloys for thickness ≥ 0.5 mm.
- Imperfection types and limits: Uses a simplified selection of imperfections (based on ISO 6520‑1) and gives dimensional limits (see Table 1) for surface and internal imperfections such as pores, lack of fusion, undercut, excess weld metal, porosity and root defects.
- Assessment rules:
- Values relate to finished welds (or applicable intermediate fabrication stages).
- Macro‑examination is the base assessment; when other methods are used, only imperfections detectable at up to 10× magnification are considered (microcracks and micro lack of fusion are excluded).
- Systematic imperfections are allowed only in quality level D (if other criteria are met).
- Multiple and adjacent imperfections have specified evaluation rules (e.g., adjacent imperfections closer than the major dimension of the smaller imperfection count as one).
- Supporting content: Annex A gives examples for porosity percentage determination; Annex B offers additional guidance for standard application.
Practical applications and users
ISO 12932:2013 is intended for:
- Welding engineers and fabricators developing laser‑arc hybrid welding processes.
- Quality managers and inspectors defining acceptance criteria and production control plans.
- Designers and procurement/specification writers who must specify weld quality for components.
- Standards committees and application code authors using the standard as a reference for contract requirements.
Use cases include production acceptance criteria, inspection planning, supplier qualification, and drafting of welding-related procurement specifications where laser‑arc hybrid welding is employed.
