This document provides terms and definitions for agricultural field equipment designed primarily for use in agricultural operations for the production of food and fibre. This document also applies to agricultural tractors used in forestry applications. Purpose-built forestry machines, as defined by ISO 6814, are not included.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12934:2021 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that defines the basic types and vocabulary related to tractors and machinery for agriculture and forestry. This second edition replaces the 2013 version with updates including new definitions for specialized equipment and revisions to tractor terminology. The standard primarily targets agricultural field equipment designed for food and fiber production and extends to agricultural tractors used in forestry, excluding purpose-built forestry machines as per ISO 6814.
ISO 12934:2021 helps standardize terminology across the agriculture and forestry machinery sectors, ensuring clarity and uniformity in communication, technical documentation, and regulatory compliance worldwide.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Application
- Covers terms and definitions for agricultural tractors, self-propelled machines, interchangeable towed machinery, trailers, and related equipment.
- Does not apply to purpose-built forestry machines.
-
Basic Definitions
- Machine/Machinery: Assemblies fitted with a drive system comprising linked parts working as an integral whole for specific applications.
- Agricultural field equipment: Includes tractors, self-propelled machines, towed machinery, trailers, and combinations thereof for field operations and occasional road use.
- Interchangeable towed machinery: Implements that modify or extend the functions of tractors or self-propelled machines.
- Maximum design ground speed, maximum mass, technically permissible mass, and unladen mass: Standardized metrics for evaluating machine capabilities and operation limits.
-
Agricultural Tractor Types
- Standard agricultural tractor: Meets minimum track width, mass, and width requirements for general use.
- Two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive tractors: Differentiated by the axles powered.
- Specialized tractors: Designed for unique field conditions such as vineyards, orchards, or mountainous terrain, including categories like high-clearance, low-profile, mudder, mountain, vineyard, orchard, and compact utility tractors.
- High-speed and extra-wide tractors: Defined by speed capability and dimension specifications.
-
Emerging Equipment Definitions
- Agricultural unoccupied aerial vehicle (UAV): Drones used for crop data collection, surveying, livestock management, and aerial applications.
- On-road towed implements: Machines designed to be towed on public roads by motor vehicles and used off-road in agriculture.
Applications
ISO 12934:2021 provides critical standardized terminology and definitions for manufacturers, regulators, researchers, and users of agricultural and forestry machinery. The applications include:
- Manufacturing: Clear specifications for machinery design, classifying tractor types and related implements.
- Safety and Compliance: Establishing uniform criteria for machine mass, speed, and operational capabilities assists with regulatory compliance and safety protocols.
- Technical Communication: Harmonizing language across technical documentation, manuals, sales literature, and training materials.
- Research and Innovation: Supporting development and classification of new machinery types, such as agricultural UAVs and advanced self-propelled harvesters.
- Agricultural and Forestry Operations: Facilitates better understanding of equipment functions and capabilities to optimize field operations.
Related Standards
- ISO 6814: Defines purpose-built forestry machines excluded from ISO 12934’s scope.
- ISO 12100:2010: General principles for machinery safety and basic machine definitions.
- ISO 789-6 & ISO 789-13: Provides definitions related to tractor track widths and center of gravity.
- ISO 3833:1977: Describes motor vehicle classifications relevant to on-road towed implements.
- ISO 500-1, ISO 500-2, ISO 730: Standards defining tractor power take-off (PTO) speeds and hitch categories.
- ISO 6165:2012: Definitions related to earth-moving machinery such as towed scrapers.
Keywords: ISO 12934, agricultural tractors, forestry machinery, farm machinery vocabulary, agricultural equipment standard, tractor types, interchangeable towed machinery, agricultural UAV, machinery definitions, farm equipment terminology.
