ISO 12944-8:2017 covers the development of specifications for corrosion protection of steel structures using protective paint systems. It relates to new work and maintenance in the workshop or on site and is also applicable to the corrosion protection of individual components. ISO 12944-8:2017 covers the corrosion protection of steel structures exposed to different corrosion stresses by environments such as indoors, open-air and immersion in water or burial in soil, as well as special stresses, due for example, to medium or high temperatures. The need for different durability ranges is considered. Steel surfaces that have been hot-dip-galvanized, metal-sprayed, zinc-electroplated or sherardized, and previously painted steel surfaces, are also covered by ISO 12944-8:2017. In ISO 12944-8:2017, reference areas for assessing the quality of the corrosion protection work and the performance of the protective paint systems used are dealt with. ISO 12944-8:2017 provides detailed flow charts for planning new work and maintenance, which are taken into account when writing a specification. ISO 12944-8:2017 can also be used as a guide if extreme corrosion stresses or high temperatures occur, or if the protective paint systems are to be used on other substrates, such as non-ferrous metals or concrete, to define suitable specifications.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 12944-8:2017 (Corrosion protection specification development)
ISO 12944-8:2017 is the ISO standard for developing technical specifications for corrosion protection of steel structures using protective paint systems. It applies to new work and maintenance (shop or on-site) and to individual components. The second edition (2017) replaces the 1998 edition and focuses on creating clear, actionable specifications that consider different environments (indoor, open-air, immersion, burial) and special stresses such as medium or high temperatures.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope of protection: Addresses uncoated and pre-treated substrates including hot-dip galvanizing, metal spray, zinc electroplating, sherardizing, and previously painted steel.
- Specification types: Defines project specification, protective paint system specification, paint work specification, and inspection & assessment specification.
- Durability and NDFT: Considers required durability ranges and specifies nominal dry film thickness (NDFT) and dry film thickness (DFT) requirements (referenced to ISO 12944‑5).
- Surface preparation & constraints: Highlights surface condition issues (contaminants, dust, previous coatings) and links to appropriate surface-prep standards.
- Planning tools: Provides detailed flow charts for planning new work and maintenance and describes reference areas for quality assessment.
- Maintenance decision-making: Guides specifiers on repair vs. partial or complete renewal and the use of sample/test areas to verify coating compatibility and appearance.
- Practical parameters to include: Required durability, environment classification, coating type and coats (primer/intermediate/top coat), application methods, place of application (shop/site), scaffolding, health & safety and environmental requirements, inspection criteria.
Applications and practical value
- Use ISO 12944-8 to prepare unambiguous, project-ready specifications for:
- Industrial steelwork, bridges, tanks, offshore and onshore structures
- Refurbishment and maintenance planning for existing coatings
- Specifying coatings where special stresses (temperature, immersion, burial) occur
- Benefits:
- Reduces disputes by clarifying responsibilities and acceptance criteria
- Improves lifecycle planning through durability-based specifications
- Ensures compatibility testing where new coatings meet existing surfaces
Who should use this standard
- Specifiers, corrosion engineers, painting contractors, inspection bodies, asset owners, and consultants involved in protective coating specification, application and inspection.
Related standards
- ISO 12944 series (notably ISO 12944-1 for general introduction, ISO 12944-2 for environment classification, ISO 12944-5 for coating thickness and testing)
