ISO 12952-2:2010 specifies tests for assessing the ignitability of all bedding items when subjected to a match-flame equivalent. ISO 12952-2:2010 applies to bedding items, which can normally be placed on a mattress, for example: mattress covers; underlays; incontinence sheets and pads; sheets; blankets; electric blankets; quilts (duvets) and covers; pillows (whatever the filling) and bolsters; pillowcases. ISO 12952-2:2010 does not apply to mattresses, bed bases and mattress pads.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12952-2:2010 - Textiles - Assessment of the ignitability of bedding items - Part 2: Ignition source: match‑flame equivalent defines a laboratory test method for assessing how easily common bedding items ignite when exposed to a small open flame equivalent to a match. The standard applies to items normally placed on a mattress (mattress covers, underlays, sheets, blankets, electric blankets, duvets, pillows, pillowcases, incontinence pads, etc.) but excludes mattresses, bed bases and mattress pads.
This standard is essential for manufacturers, test laboratories and safety engineers who need consistent, repeatable bedding flammability test results to support product design, compliance and risk assessment.
Key Topics
- Ignition source: A controlled butane gas flame simulates a match‑flame equivalent (nominal flow ≈ 45 ml/min; flame height ≈ 35 mm).
- Apparatus & substrate: Test rig with open mesh platform and a mineral‑wool fibre pad (testing substrate) to simulate mattress thermal properties (approx. 25 ± 5 mm thick).
- Specimen preparation:
- Representative cut sizes (typically 450 × 450 mm for flat items).
- Items are washed or dry‑cleaned five times per care instructions before testing (or tested as received for single‑use products).
- Conditioning & test atmosphere:
- Condition specimens for 72 h at (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 4)% RH.
- Test in a draught‑free environment (10–30 °C; 15–80% RH).
- Test procedure:
- Butane flame applied in specified positions for (15 ± 1) s; observe for smouldering or flaming.
- Clear pass/fail criteria for progressive smouldering and flaming ignition (e.g., flaming continuing > 120 s after source removal is considered flaming ignition).
- Safety: Tests produce fumes and smouldering specimens can be difficult to extinguish - use fume extraction, protective equipment and appropriate extinguishing methods.
Applications
- Product safety and compliance: Validate bedding items for ignitability risk and support regulatory or voluntary safety claims.
- Design and material selection: Compare fabrics, fillings, trims and constructions for improved flame resistance.
- Quality control: Routine testing of production batches or incoming materials.
- Risk assessment: Inform safety instructions, labeling and procurement decisions for residential, healthcare and hospitality sectors.
Typical users: textile manufacturers, third‑party testing laboratories, fire safety engineers, retailers, procurement teams, and regulators.
