This document specifies technical characteristics and strength requirements for fork arm extensions and telescopic fork arms (as defined in ISO 5053-2) for industrial trucks (as defined in ISO 5053-1). It applies to fork arm extensions and telescopic fork arms that are designed for use on industrial trucks that have fork arm carriers and, in the case of fork arm extensions, fork arms that conform to ISO 2330. This document does not apply to integral transverse telescopic fork devices or scissor-action reach devices.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 13284:2026 sets out internationally recognized requirements for the technical characteristics and strength of fork arm extensions and telescopic fork arms used on industrial trucks. This standard, developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), applies specifically to accessories designed to temporarily extend or variably adjust the blade length of fork arms on industrial trucks, as defined in ISO 5053-1 and ISO 5053-2. It focuses on ensuring consistent safety and performance by prescribing requirements for rated capacity, load centre distance, safety factors, and specific features such as lateral clearance and retaining systems. The document does not address integral transverse telescopic fork devices or scissor-action reach devices.
Key Topics
- Technical Characteristics: The standard defines the mechanical and dimensional properties fork arm extensions and telescopic fork arms must meet. This covers aspects such as minimum fork lengths, design loads, and limitations on lateral clearances.
- Strength and Load Requirements:
- Requirements for rated capacity and load centre distance for both extensions and telescopic fork arms
- Safety factors in accordance with ISO 2330
- Test/load requirements for various operating modes (retracted and extended)
- Design Features:
- Retaining systems to prevent accidental disengagement
- Specific restrictions on the vertical and lateral movement of extensions
- Marking requirements for traceability and correct usage
- Reference Compatibility: Applies only to fork arm extensions for arms conforming to ISO 2330, ensuring compatibility within existing ISO standards for forklift equipment.
Applications
ISO 13284:2026 is essential for manufacturers, suppliers, and users of industrial trucks where enhanced flexibility in handling diverse load sizes is required. Typical use cases include:
- Logistics and Warehousing: Enabling the temporary extension of fork reach to handle larger or unconventional loads, improving storage and retrieval processes.
- Material Handling: Telescopic fork arms facilitate efficient double-deep stacking and de-stacking operations, vital in maximizing storage density while maintaining safety.
- Manufacturing and Distribution: Companies using a variety of pallet sizes or those needing to adapt to varied product geometries benefit from standardized extension arms, ensuring safe, reliable operation.
- Rental and Fleet Management: Standardization aids in compatibility and ease of maintenance across mixed fleets of industrial trucks.
By following ISO 13284:2026, organizations can ensure attachments meet globally accepted strength and safety requirements, thereby reducing the risk of equipment failure or workplace incidents.
Related Standards
To implement ISO 13284:2026 effectively, organizations should also consider the following related standards:
- ISO 5053-1 / ISO 5053-2: Definitions and classification for industrial trucks and their attachments.
- ISO 3691-1 & ISO 3691-2: Safety requirements and verification for self-propelled industrial trucks and variable-reach trucks.
- ISO 2330: Technical characteristics and testing for forklift truck fork arms.
Adhering to these standards ensures broad compatibility, enhances safety, and supports legal and supply chain compliance across international operations.
