ISO 13341:2010 specifies the procedures to be followed when connecting cylinder valves to gas cylinders. It specifically applies to all valve and cylinder combinations connected with ISO screw threads as specified in ISO 10920 and ISO 11363-1. It defines routines for inspection and preparation prior to valving for both taper and parallel screw threads. Torque values are given for steel and aluminium gas cylinders including composite cylinders with steel or aluminium boss. The procedures and practices specified in ISO 13341:2010 can be beneficially applied to other valve to cylinder screw thread connection systems.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 13341:2010 - Gas cylinders: Fitting of valves to gas cylinders defines standardized procedures for connecting cylinder valves to gas cylinders with ISO screw threads. It covers inspection, preparation, sealing and torquing routines for both taper (ISO 11363-1) and parallel (ISO 15245-1) threads and includes normative torque values for steel, aluminium and composite cylinders (Annex A). The standard is intended to ensure gas-tight, reliable valve-to-cylinder assemblies and reduce risk from incorrect fitting.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Thread compatibility and inspection
- Verify valve and cylinder threads conform to the same dimensional standard (e.g. ISO 11363-1, ISO 15245-1).
- Visually inspect threads and sealing surfaces; check for burrs, damaged O-rings and contaminants.
- Preparation and cleanliness
- Remove old PTFE tape, sealants, paint and debris; prevent contaminants entering the cylinder.
- Ensure the top face (for parallel threads) is clean so the valve flange can seat correctly.
- Sealing methods
- Taper threads: PTFE sealant tape (wrapped from small end, 1–3 mm protrusion, min three layers) or soft metal caps (avoid lead caps on aluminium).
- Parallel threads: use O-ring per ISO 15245-1; do not apply thread sealants or lubricants to threads.
- Annex B discusses paste (anaerobic) use and precautions to avoid internal contamination.
- Torque values and validation
- Annex A gives torque ranges for common valve stem sizes (examples: taper 17E for steel: 120–150 Nm; 25E: 200–300 Nm; aluminium values are lower).
- Apply torque within the specified range and validate using a calibrated torque wrench by measuring the torque required to move the valve after installation.
- Special conditions
- Lower torques for aluminium and some composite cylinders; avoid valving aluminium at elevated temperatures.
- Follow manufacturer-specific instructions when provided (reduced torque limits, special valve designs).
- Tooling and calibration
- Use properly fitting tools and secure the cylinder; periodically validate torque tools and machines.
Applications and users
ISO 13341:2010 is used by:
- Cylinder and valve manufacturers for assembly and installation procedures
- Gas suppliers and bottling plants for safe valving operations
- Service technicians, maintenance teams and inspection bodies for retesting and re-valving
- Regulatory and safety auditors enforcing cylinder handling best practices Practical applications include medical oxygen cylinders, industrial gases, refrigerants and composite cylinder assemblies.
