ISO 13363:2016 specifies requirements for three types and two classes of hose. The hoses are intended for use in marine-engine wet-exhaust systems (where the exhaust gases are mixed with the discharge of cooling water). It does not apply to outboard motor/personal water craft. The three types are the following: - type 1: a softwall hose, made of oil-resistant material, with a synthetic-fabric reinforcement; - type 2: a hardwall hose, made of oil-resistant material, with a synthetic-fabric reinforcement with a helical wire embedded in it; - type 3: a hose or tube (flexible connector), made of oil-resistant material, with or without a reinforcement or cover, intended for use in short lengths in locations where the connector is protected from mechanical damage. The two classes are the following: - class A: intended for diesel engines; - class B: intended for petrol engines and for diesel engines with a very high exhaust temperature.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 13363:2016 - "Rubber and plastics hoses for marine-engine wet-exhaust systems - Specification" defines construction, performance and test requirements for hoses used where exhaust gases are mixed with cooling water (wet-exhaust systems). It covers three hose types (softwall, hardwall with embedded helical wire, and short flexible connectors) and two classes (Class A for diesel engines; Class B for petrol engines and very-high-temperature diesel applications). The standard excludes outboard motors and personal watercraft.
Key topics and requirements
- Types & classes
- Type 1: softwall, oil-resistant material with synthetic-fabric reinforcement.
- Type 2: hardwall, oil-resistant with synthetic-fabric reinforcement and embedded helical wire.
- Type 3: short flexible connector, with or without reinforcement, for protected locations.
- Class A: diesel-engine service; Class B: petrol or very-high-temperature diesel service (plastics not permitted for Class B).
- Materials & construction
- Smooth-bore water- and heat-resistant lining; oil/fuel-resistant linings for Class A.
- Synthetic-fabric reinforcements (not required for Type 3); helical wire for Type 2; covers resistant to ozone, heat and abrasion (not required for Type 3).
- Dimensions
- Nominal bores covered (e.g., 32–127 mm) with defined inside-diameter tolerances and minimum bend radii measured per ISO 4671.
- Performance & physical tests
- Minimum burst pressure: ≥ 0.25 MPa (2.5 bar) (ISO 1402).
- Tensile strength / elongation minima for lining and cover (e.g., lining ≥ 8 MPa and ≥ 200% elongation; cover ≥ 7 MPa and ≥ 200% elongation).
- Accelerated ageing, heat-resistance (Annex A) - hoses must withstand 2 minutes of exhaust gas at specified temperatures (typically 370 °C for Class A and 580 °C for Class B).
- Compression set (rubber hoses) ≤ 45% after 24 h at 100 °C.
- Liquid resistance for Class A linings (ISO 1817); plastics loss-in-mass ≤ 4% (ISO 176).
- Flexibility, ozone (rubber), UV (plastics) and adhesion (≥ 1.5 kN/m) tests.
- Long-term ageing: 1 000 h at 85 °C with retention limits on burst pressure and adhesion.
- Marking & quality
- Specifies marking and test frequency, and normative test/acceptance procedures for manufacturers and purchasers.
Applications and users
ISO 13363:2016 is used for:
- Marine equipment manufacturers and hose suppliers specifying compliant wet-exhaust hoses
- Naval architects, OEMs and boat builders for component selection
- Marine surveyors, classification societies and procurement teams for acceptance testing
- Maintenance and repair yards for replacement and inspection criteria
