Gives dimensions of 110-size cartridges, locations and dimensions of film exposure notches and film identification notches inclusively dimensions of 110-size film and backing paper. Replaces ISO 7374, ISO 7330 and ISO 7261.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 13450:1996 - "Photography - 110‑size cartridge, film and backing paper - Dimensions" specifies the physical dimensions, datum references and notching requirements for 110‑size photographic cartridges, film and backing paper. It consolidates and replaces ISO 7374, ISO 7330 and ISO 7261. The standard defines how cartridges mate with camera parts (seated, rail and take‑up datum planes), the mandatory locations for film exposure notches, optional film identification notches, and the format and sizes for 110‑size film and backing paper. Annexes include a torque measurement method, film advancement guidance and a system for assigning identification notch codes.
Key topics and requirements
- Cartridge dimensions and tolerances: Detailed nominal and permissible dimensions for assembled cartridges and spool components (see table references in the standard).
- Datum referencing: Three primary datum planes - S (seated), R (rail) and T (take‑up) - used to ensure consistent cartridge alignment in cameras.
- Notching requirements:
- Film exposure notches: Mandatory locations that preset camera exposure settings; dimensions and rib removal specified.
- Film identification notches: Optional; coded notch combinations indicate film type and exposure count. Dimensions and centerlines are specified so camera detection devices can reliably identify films.
- Measurement conditions: Dimensions apply at time of manufacture under conditioning of (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5) % relative humidity (referenced normative conditions).
- Performance limits: Film advance and torque requirements are specified (e.g., maximum sustain and peak torques for film advance and winding; see Annex A for measurement method).
- Film and backing paper formats: Layouts and cut‑out positions for negative and reversal films and backing paper are defined.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 13450:1996 is used by:
- Camera manufacturers - to ensure cartridge seating, exposure indexing and mechanical compatibility.
- Film and cartridge producers - to design and manufacture 110‑size cartridges, film strips and backing paper to standard dimensions and notch codes.
- Testing and QA laboratories - for dimensional inspections, torque testing and conformity checks.
- Restoration, archiving and specialty imaging suppliers - to verify authentic cartridge/film interchangeability and mechanical fit.
Consistent implementation helps ensure reliable film advance, correct exposure alignment and interoperability across camera and film products.
