Abstract
Overview
ISO 13628-9:2000 - "Petroleum and natural gas industries - Design and operation of subsea production systems - Part 9: Remotely Operated Tool (ROT) intervention systems" specifies functional requirements and recommendations for ROT intervention systems and their interfaces on subsea production systems. It defines the ROT concept (wire-suspended, unmanned tools used for lift and installation tasks beyond free‑swimming ROV capacity) and describes system elements, selection criteria and operational phases. It explicitly excludes manned and ROV-only intervention, vertical wellbore intervention, internal flowline inspection and tree running.
Key topics and technical requirements
- System composition: ROTs, deck handling equipment, intervention control system (ICS), deployment/landing equipment and the ROV spread (when used).
- System selection & evaluation: Consider life cycle cost (LCC), vessel flexibility, environmental and task-specific parameters, and logistics. Evaluate all intervention phases (mobilization, launch/landing, intervention task, retrieval, demobilization and contingency).
- Intervention Control System (ICS): Options include dedicated ROT control, ROV control, or combined systems. ICS must support deck testing, status monitoring and subsea control of ROT functions.
- Deck handling and deployment: Guidance on selecting winches, heave-compensated launch systems, skids and A-frames to enable use of a wide range of vessels while maintaining safety and reliability.
- Functional requirements: Design for simplicity, robustness and redundancy. All operations must be reversible and suspensible; functions that could prevent recovery must include overrides. Include weak-link or safe-release mechanisms on liftwire/umbilical interfaces and ROT–ROV connections.
- Mechanical and environmental specs: Certification to safe working load (SWL) for all elements; ROT temperature range 0 °C to 50 °C (with critical components tested to −18 °C for operations/storage below 2 °C); resistance to transport/operational vibration.
- Testing & interfaces: Emphasizes realistic testing, factory acceptance tests (FAT), and clear mechanical/electrical interface definitions (e.g., pull-in and connection systems, skids, termination heads).
Applications and users
ISO 13628-9 is used by:
- Subsea systems designers and engineers specifying ROT capability and interfaces
- Offshore operators planning tie‑ins, module replacement and heavy subsea installation tasks
- Vessel and deck equipment suppliers, ROT and ROV manufacturers
- Project managers, procurement and HSE personnel assessing intervention risk, logistics and LCC
Practical benefits include improved safety, predictable intervention logistics, lower life‑cycle cost through design-for-intervention and standardized interfaces.
