This document specifies the characteristics of parallel grooved pins with half-length diamond grooves (with closed ends), in steel and stainless steel, and with nominal diameters 1 mm to 25 mm. These grooved pins are designed to fulfil the main following functions: — positioning or guiding, and — relative rotation of the assembled parts, with a more significant insertion force (due to its shape) and a high level of pull-out resistance (due to the elastic fit behaviour of the pin). The general requirements (including functional principles for grooved pins and assembly) are specified in ISO 13669.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 13672:2025 - Fasteners - Parallel grooved pins - Half-length diamond grooves defines the characteristics and dimensional requirements for parallel grooved pins with half‑length diamond grooves (closed ends). The standard covers pins manufactured in steel and stainless steel with nominal diameters from 1 mm to 25 mm. These grooved pins are intended for positioning, guiding and enabling relative rotation of assembled parts, offering higher insertion force and strong pull‑out resistance through elastic fit behaviour. General functional principles and assembly requirements are referenced to ISO 13669.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and materials: Pins in steel (symbol St) and stainless steel (A1, A2, A4, C1, F1 grades referenced); other materials permitted by agreement.
- Dimensions & geometry: Detailed dimensional tables for diameters 1–25 mm; grooves occupy half the pin length (l/2) with specified tolerances by length range.
- Groove details: Three grooves spaced at 120° (±20°); groove angle ≈70° (reference). Groove start must remain closed and not reach rounded/chamfered ends; maximum offset lmax specified by pin length (e.g., l ≤ 10 mm → lmax = 1 mm; 10 < l ≤ 50 mm → lmax = 2 mm; up to 200 mm → lmax = 4 mm).
- Quality & inspection: Control of expanded diameter and straightness as per ISO 13669; acceptance inspection referenced to ISO 3269.
- Surface finishes & coatings: As‑processed for steel; clean & bright for stainless steel. Electroplated coatings (ISO 4042), zinc‑flake coatings (ISO 10683), phosphate conversion (ISO 9717), and other finishes by agreement.
- Packaging & labelling: Required labelling includes ISO reference, nominal d × l, options (CH for chamfered), material symbol, surface condition, manufacturer ID, lot number (ISO 1891‑4) and quantity.
- Designation examples: Clear format shown (e.g., Grooved pin ISO 13672 – 6 × 50 – St).
Applications
- Engineering and manufacturing assemblies needing precise positioning, guiding or rotational indexing between parts.
- High‑retention press‑fit applications where pull‑out resistance and controlled insertion force are required (mechanical assemblies, gear positioning, shaft locating, fixtures).
- Suppliers, fastener manufacturers, design engineers and quality/inspection teams using standardized grooved pins in machinery, automotive components, instrumentation and industrial equipment.
Who should use this standard
- Fastener manufacturers for product specification and quality control.
- Design and mechanical engineers specifying pins for assemblies.
- Procurement, inspection and quality assurance teams requiring consistent labelling, acceptance criteria and interchangeability.
