La présente partie de l'ISO 13937 décrit une méthode appelée méthode balistique au pendule (méthode Elmendorf) pour la détermination de la force de déchirure des étoffes. La méthode prescrit le mode de mesurage de la force de déchirure nécessaire pour poursuivre une déchirure d'une longueur définie amorcée par une entaille dans une étoffe lors de l'application d'une force brusque.L'essai s'applique essentiellement aux étoffes tissées. Il peut être appliqué aux étoffes produites par d'autres techniques, comme les non-tissés (avec les mêmes restrictions que celles qui sont mentionnées ci-dessous pour les étoffes tissées).En général, l'essai ne s'applique pas aux étoffes tricotées et aux tissus élastiques. Il ne convient pas aux étoffes très anisotropes ou aux étoffes lâches dans lesquelles la déchirure risque de se propager dans un sens différent.NOTE 1 : Pour les essais réalisés avec des appareils d'essai de traction, la partie 2 de la norme traite d'une méthode de déchirure unique appelée l'essai du pantalon, la partie 3 de l'essai sur éprouvette croissant et la partie 4 de l'essai de languette.NOTE 2 : Pour la méthode balistique au pendule des étoffes revêtues, se référer à l'ISO 4674-2. En ce qui concerne l'essai sur éprouvette trapézoïdale, se référer à l'ISO 9073-4 pour la méthode pour non-tissés et à l'ISO 4674 pour celle des étoffes revêtues.

ISO 13937-1:2000 - "Textiles - Tear properties of fabrics - Part 1: Determination of tear force using ballistic pendulum method (Elmendorf)" - specifies the Elmendorf (ballistic pendulum) method to determine the tear force required to propagate a single-rip tear in textile fabrics. The standard is primarily applicable to woven fabrics (and some nonwovens with restrictions) and is not generally suitable for knitted, highly elastic, highly anisotropic or very loose fabrics.
