This document specifies the essential limit deviations and run-out tolerances for bonded abrasive products.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 13942:2019 - Bonded abrasive products - Limit deviations and run-out tolerances defines the essential dimensional tolerances and run‑out (axial and radial) requirements for bonded abrasive products. The standard covers a wide range of product types (straight, recessed, relieved, hubbed, dish and cup wheels, cutting-off wheels, segments, cones, plugs, honing stones, finishing sticks, and spindle‑mounted points/wheels) and references established geometric tolerancing practices. It is intended for manufacturers, test laboratories, quality engineers and purchasers who need consistent, measurable limits for abrasive-product geometry and assembly.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and terminology: Adopts terms and definitions from ISO 286-1 and uses ISO geometric tolerancing symbols (ISO 1101, ISO 5459).
- Product shapes: Identifies relevant shape types according to ISO 525 (for example: types 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 20–26, 38–40 for straight grinding wheels).
- Limit deviations and run‑out tolerances:
- Outside diameter tolerances (T_D) and run‑out tolerances (axial T_PL and radial T_RL) are tabulated by diameter ranges (see Table 2). Example: for D = 8–20 mm the outside diameter tolerance is ±0.8 mm with axial run‑out 0.2 mm and radial run‑out 0.3 mm; for D = 50–125 mm T_D = ±2.0 mm, axial 0.2 mm, radial 0.4 mm.
- Hole and recess diameter limits are provided (see Tables 3 and 4) with size-specific positive limit deviations and maximum recess radii.
- Thickness and bore tolerances: Overall thickness, smallest thickness for tapered/depressed wheels, thickness at bore, wall and rim widths are specified with limit deviations for different product categories.
- Special cases: Requirements for high‑pressure wheels, wheel sets, wheels with threaded inserts and spindle‑mounted points are included.
Practical applications and users
- Who uses ISO 13942:
- Abrasive-product manufacturers to design and control production tolerances.
- Quality control and inspection labs to accept/reject parts based on standardized limits.
- Machine shops and toolrooms to select wheels that meet fit and run‑out requirements for safe, accurate grinding.
- Procurement and regulatory compliance teams for specifying accepted tolerances in purchase orders.
- Benefits:
- Improves interchangeability, safety and grinding accuracy.
- Reduces rejects, assembly issues and machine vibration related to excessive run‑out.
- Facilitates conformity assessment and international trade by using recognized tolerance classes.
