ISO 13998:2003 is applicable to protective aprons, trousers and vests for use with hand knives, and to other garments which provide similar protection to parts of the body in accidents. It specifies requirements for the design, penetration resistance, cut resistance, sizing, ergonomic characteristics, innocuousness, water permeability, cleaning and disinfection, marking and information to be supplied by the manufacturer for users of protective aprons, trousers and vests. It also describes the classification of protection levels and appropriate test methods.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 13998:2003 - Protective clothing - Aprons, trousers and vests protecting against cuts and stabs by hand knives - specifies requirements and test methods for garments designed to reduce injury from hand knives. The standard covers design, penetration resistance, cut resistance, sizing, ergonomics, innocuousness (safety of materials), optional water permeability, cleaning and disinfection, marking and user information. It also defines performance level classification and appropriate test procedures for protective aprons, divided aprons, trousers and vests.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope and garment types: Aprons, divided aprons, protective trousers and vests with a defined protective surface (metal chain mail or equivalent protective material).
- Performance levels: Classification of protection (e.g., Performance Level 1 for light work; Performance Level 2 for higher-risk tasks such as slaughterhouse and boning operations) and guidance on appropriate use.
- Mechanical properties and tests:
- Penetration resistance (knife impact/penetration testing)
- Cut resistance (reference to cut test methods and test apparatus)
- Tensile strength of fixings (metal rings, seams and supports)
- Measurement of interstices (openings between protective elements) and tests for imperfect welds (Annex B)
- Design & ergonomic requirements: Minimum protected zones, support and restraint of aprons (strap systems), sizing, mass limits and ergonomics for safe daily use.
- Hygiene and maintenance: Requirements for cleaning, disinfection, innocuousness of materials in contact with food, and optional water permeability testing.
- Marking and user information: Manufacturer instructions, pictograms and safety information to support correct selection, fitting and care.
- Guidance annex: Annex A provides advice on risk assessment, knife profiles, PPE selection and apron fitting.
Applications and Who Uses It
ISO 13998:2003 is primarily applied where hand knives are used and there is risk of cuts or stabs:
- Meat, fish and shellfish processing, slaughterhouses and boning operations
- Large-scale catering and food preparation
- Industries using hand knives: plastics, leather, textile, paper, flooring installation
- PPE manufacturers, safety engineers, procurement/specification teams, test laboratories and certification bodies use this standard to design, test and certify protective garments
