ISO 14113:2013 specifies requirements for rubber and plastics hose and hose assemblies for use with compressed, liquefied, and dissolved gases up to a maximum working pressure of 450 bar (45 MPa), within the ambient temperature range of −20 °C to +60 °C. It applies to hose assemblies used to connect industrial gas cylinders to manifolds or bundles prior to any pressure reduction stage. It does not cover rubber or thermoplastic hoses for welding, cutting, and allied processes (see ISO 3821 and ISO 12170). It does not apply to refrigerated liquefied gases or to liquefied petroleum gases (LPG).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 14113:2013 - "Gas welding equipment - Rubber and plastics hose and hose assemblies for use with industrial gases up to 450 bar (45 MPa)" specifies requirements for high‑pressure rubber and plastic hoses and hose assemblies used with compressed, liquefied, and dissolved industrial gases up to a maximum working pressure of 450 bar (45 MPa) and ambient temperatures −20 °C to +60 °C. It covers hose assemblies that connect gas cylinders to manifolds or bundles prior to any pressure reduction stage and sets construction, dimension, testing, marking, packaging, and instruction requirements. Excluded are hoses for welding/cutting processes (see ISO 3821 and ISO 12170), refrigerated liquefied gases, and LPG.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & exclusions: Applies to cylinder-to-manifold connections before pressure reduction; excludes welding hoses, refrigerated liquefied gases, and LPG.
- Construction: Hoses must have a compatible rubber or plastics lining, one or more reinforcement layers, and an outer protective cover. For flammable gases, bonding wires or stainless steel braid are required to provide electrical conductivity and abrasion/corrosion resistance.
- End fittings & assemblies: Fittings must be permanent (swage/crimp) and designed to reach hose burst pressure without pullout; field‑attachable fittings are not permitted. Distance pieces and restraining devices are required in specific oxygen/high‑pressure applications (retraining recommended for >40 bar).
- Dimensions: Nominal bore sizes and concentricity tolerances are specified (special limit: acetylene hoses effective bore ≤ 25 mm).
- Type & production tests: Includes physical lining/cover tests, oxygen autogenous ignition testing (ISO 11114‑3 at ≥130 bar), acetone resistance for acetylene, pressure/burst and proof testing, adhesion, flexibility (including low temperature), ozone/UV resistance, permeability, electrical conductivity, end fitting integrity, leak and cleaning tests for oxygen service.
- Marking, packaging, instructions: Requirements for safe handling, identification and user instructions are included.
Practical applications and users
ISO 14113:2013 is used by:
- Hose and hose‑assembly manufacturers (design, testing, certification)
- Gas suppliers and cylinder/manifold installers (selection and procurement)
- Welding and industrial safety engineers (system design and risk mitigation)
- Testing laboratories and quality managers (type/production testing & compliance)
- Regulators and procurement teams requiring documented safety for high‑pressure gas systems
Benefits include improved safety for high‑pressure industrial gas handling, reduced ignition and leak risks, and clearer compliance guidance for cylinder‑to‑manifold connections.
