ISO 14122-4:2016 gives requirements for fixed ladders which are a part of a stationary machine, and to the non-powered adjustable parts (e.g. foldable, slidable) and movable parts of fixed ladder systems. NOTE 1 "Fixed" means of access are those mounted in such a manner (for example, by screws, nuts, welding) that they can only be removed by the use of tools. ISO 14122-4:2016 specifies minimum requirements that also apply when the same means of access is required as the part of the building or civil construction (e.g. fixed ladders) where the machine is installed, on condition that the main function of that part of the construction is to provide a means of access to the machine. NOTE 2 Where no local regulation or standards exists, this part of ISO 14122 may be used also for means of access which are outside the scope of the standard. It is intended that this part of ISO 14122 be used with ISO 14122‑1 to give the requirements for fixed ladder systems. The ISO 14122 series as a whole is applicable to both stationary and mobile machinery where fixed means of access are necessary. It is not applicable to powered means of access such as lifts, escalators, or other devices specially designed to lift persons between two levels. ISO 14122-4:2016 is not applicable to machinery manufactured before the date of its publication.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 14122-4:2016 - Safety of machinery - Permanent means of access to machinery - Part 4: Fixed ladders defines minimum safety requirements for fixed ladders that are part of machinery or the building/civil construction when their main function is to provide access to a machine. The standard covers fixed ladders including their non-powered adjustable and movable parts (e.g., foldable, slidable) and is intended to be used together with ISO 14122-1. It applies to stationary and mobile machinery where fixed means of access are necessary, but it is not applicable to powered access (lifts, escalators) or to machinery manufactured before the standard’s publication.
Key topics and technical requirements
ISO 14122-4:2016 addresses practical design, installation and verification matters for safe fixed ladder systems. Major technical topics include:
- Selection and design of ladder systems
- General design and construction principles
- Choice of ladder type based on available space
- Spacing from permanent obstructions
- Fall protection
- Necessity and selection of fall protection devices (safety cages, fall arresters)
- Guidance for risk assessment and limits tied to total ladder height (e.g., sections for >3 000 mm ≤10 000 mm and >10 000 mm)
- Platforms and landings
- Installation at arrival/departure areas
- Requirements for intermediate and rest platforms and landings
- Specific structural requirements
- Load actions: permanent (dead) and variable (rated) loads, additional loading
- Strength and design of ladder elements: stiles, rungs, connections
- Requirements for single-stile and two-stile ladders
- Departure/arrival areas and access openings
- Safe exit/entry arrangements, trap door considerations
- Verification and testing
- Stability verification by calculation or testing
- Tests for ladder strength, bending, safety cages, and guard-rail extensions
- Information for use
- Instruction handbook requirements and marking (especially for ladders with fall arresters)
- Annexes
- Normative guidance on anti-climb devices and informative dimension summaries and changes from prior editions
Practical applications and users
ISO 14122-4 is used to design, specify, validate and maintain safe fixed access to machinery. Typical users include:
- Machine manufacturers specifying built-in access
- Plant designers and integrators planning machinery installation
- Health & safety professionals and regulators setting compliance expectations
- Maintenance and service providers using and inspecting fixed ladders
- Employers and facility managers responsible for worker access safety
Adopting ISO 14122-4 supports compliance with machinery safety best practices, reduces fall risk, and helps document validated designs and testing for fixed ladder systems.
