ISO 14132-4:2015 applies to astronomical telescopes and gives terms and definitions for astronomical telescopes only. The alphabetical indexes of terms that are common for all published parts of ISO 14132 are published in ISO 14132‑1. The definitions can be changed, if required, by introducing derivative attributes into them, revealing the meanings of the terms used, showing the objects covered by the scope of the notion being defined. These changes will not to affect the scope and contents of this part of ISO 14132.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 14132-4:2015 - Optics and photonics - Vocabulary for telescopic systems - Part 4: Terms for astronomical telescopes - is an ISO vocabulary standard that defines terminology specific to astronomical telescopes. This second edition (2015) applies only to astronomical telescopes and complements the general and cross-part indexes published in ISO 14132‑1. The standard standardizes terms and definitions (and allows introduction of derivative attributes) to ensure consistent, unambiguous use of telescope-related vocabulary across design, manufacture, testing and documentation.
Key topics
- Astronomical telescope: defined as a telescopic instrument intended for observations of celestial objects.
- Clear aperture of objective (D): largest diameter in object space of an incident bundle of rays passing unrestricted by the objective mount; equal to the telescope’s entrance pupil diameter.
- Angular resolution and Rayleigh criterion: capability to discriminate two points as separate; ISO 14132‑4 gives the limit of angular resolution based on the Rayleigh criterion expressed in radians as a function of observation wavelength (λ) and clear aperture (D).
- Diffraction-limited telescope: telescope whose angular resolution meets the Rayleigh criterion.
- Resolving power: defined as the reciprocal of the angular resolution.
- Common optical accessories and components with standardized terms:
- Finder telescope
- Diagonal prism
- Barlow lens
- Solar projection plate
- Herschel wedge
- Specification notes: the document references ISO 14132‑1 for shared indexes and describes how definitions may include derivative attributes to clarify scope without changing the part’s contents.
Applications
ISO 14132‑4:2015 is useful wherever precise telescope terminology matters:
- Manufacturers and product designers - for consistent component descriptions, datasheets and technical specifications.
- Test labs and metrology - for reporting optical performance (clear aperture, angular resolution, resolving power).
- Observatory engineers and amateur astronomy equipment suppliers - for procurement, setup and maintenance documentation.
- Technical writers, educators and translators - for preparing manuals, training materials and multilingual deliverables with standardized vocabulary.
- Standards committees and regulatory bodies - to harmonize terminology across optics, photonics and astronomy-related standards.
