This document specifies the structure and properties of the Earth’s atmosphere from ground level upward. It provides internationally accepted empirical models that specify the details of the atmosphere. It also refers to widely-accepted physical models providing insight into the physical and chemical processes driving the response of the atmosphere.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 14222:2022 - Space environment (natural and artificial) - Earth's atmosphere from ground level upward - is an international standard that specifies the structure and properties of the Earth’s atmosphere from the surface through the exosphere. The document provides internationally accepted empirical atmosphere models and refers to widely‑accepted physical models and indices that describe temperature, density, composition, winds and radiation as a function of altitude, location, time and space‑weather activity.
Key topics
- Scope and purpose: standardized methods to specify atmospheric properties from ground level up to the exosphere for engineering and operational use (aircraft, balloons, rockets, LEO spacecraft).
- Atmospheric layers and definitions: clear terms and definitions for troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, exosphere and the homosphere.
- Empirical and physical models referenced: inclusion and guidance for models such as NRLMSIS 2.0, Earth GRAM 2016, JB2008, HWM14 (horizontal wind model) and other drag/temperature models (see Annex A for model details).
- Space‑weather and indices: treatment of solar and geomagnetic indices (e.g., F10.7, A indices, short‑ and long‑term averages) and natural electromagnetic radiation (detailed in Annex B) for use in model inputs.
- Use and robustness: guidance on model application, assumptions, variability (seasonal, geographic, solar cycle, geomagnetic events) and long‑term atmospheric changes.
- Annexes: informative annexes provide model descriptions (Annex A: neutral atmospheres) and radiation/indices (Annex B).
Applications
ISO 14222:2022 is directly applicable to:
- Spacecraft and mission design - atmospheric density and wind models for drag estimation, orbital lifetime and station‑keeping design in LEO.
- Attitude and control system sizing - predicting aerodynamic torques and accelerations on satellites and re‑entry vehicles.
- Materials and contamination assessment - assessing atomic oxygen flux and surface corrosion for spacecraft coatings and instruments.
- Launch and operations planning - atmospheric profiles for trajectory design, balloon and high‑altitude vehicle analysis.
- Aerospace research and modelling - standard reference for atmospheric datasets and validation.
Who uses it: aerospace engineers, mission planners, atmospheric scientists, launch operators, standards bodies and regulatory agencies.
Related standards and notes
- Prepared by ISO/TC 20/SC 14 (Space systems and operations).
- This second edition (2022) replaces ISO 14222:2013 and updates model references and coverage to the exosphere.
- See Annex A (neutral atmosphere models) and Annex B (natural electromagnetic radiation and indices) for model inputs and implementation guidance.
