ISO 14232-1:2017 specifies measuring methods for the characterization of powders and their technical supply conditions. It is applicable to powders that are used in thermal spraying on the basis of their physical and chemical properties.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 14232-1:2017 - Thermal spraying - Powders - Part 1: Characterization and technical supply conditions - defines standardized measuring methods and supply requirements for powders used in thermal spraying. The standard focuses on the physical and chemical properties that control powder feedability, melting behaviour and, ultimately, coating performance. It is the characterization part of the ISO 14232 series (see ISO/TR 14232-2 for application guidance).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Measurement and documentation methods for powders intended for thermal spraying based on chemical and physical properties.
- Sampling: Requirements for representative sampling and sample splitting in accordance with ISO 3954.
- Chemical composition: Accepted test methods include ICP‑OES, wet chemical analysis, AAS, flame emission, XRF and EDX. Results reported as mass (weight) percentages.
- Particle size range / Particle size distribution (PSD): PSD strongly affects melting and feedability. Recommended sizing methods: sieve analysis, air‑jet sieving and laser scattering. The standard requires always to state the measuring procedure and gives common industry tolerances for oversized/undersized fractions for different size ranges.
- Manufacturing process & particle shape: Indicate manufacturing route (e.g., gas atomization, sintering, spray spheroidization) and illustrate morphology with SEM or stereo microscopy. Annex A provides example morphologies.
- Apparent density: Measured per ISO 3923‑2 and expressed in g/cm3 (alternatives like ASTM B329/B417/B212 noted).
- Flowability: Determined per ISO 4490 and expressed as s/50 g (ASTM B213 is an alternative). Fine powders may be non‑flowing; special methods apply for organics or blends.
- Microstructure and phases: Metallography, SEM/EDX, X‑ray analysis and image analysis for multiphase powders; method selection agreed between parties.
- Classification & identification: Powder categories (pure metals, alloys, carbides, oxides, composites, organics) and concise designation format (composition + size + measuring method + process).
- Conditions of supply & certification: Requirements for dry, contamination‑free packing, labelling (e.g., “Blend thoroughly before use”) and provision of certificates.
Applications and users
ISO 14232-1 is practical for:
- Powder manufacturers establishing quality control and technical data sheets for thermal spray powders.
- Thermal spray operators & coating engineers specifying powders for HVOF, plasma spray, flame spray, etc.
- Quality assurance and procurement teams requiring standardized certificates and supply conditions.
- Test laboratories and R&D groups performing powder characterization and process development. Industries benefiting include aerospace, power generation, automotive, oil & gas and surface‑engineering service providers.
