ISO 14313:2007 specifies requirements and provides recommendations for the design, manufacturing, testing and documentation of ball, check, gate and plug valves for application in pipeline systems meeting the requirements of ISO 13623 for the petroleum and natural gas industries. ISO 14313:2007 is not applicable to subsea pipeline valves, as they are covered by a separate International Standard (ISO 14723). ISO 14313:2007 is not applicable to valves for pressure ratings exceeding PN 420 (Class 2 500).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 14313:2007 - "Petroleum and natural gas industries - Pipeline transportation systems - Pipeline valves" - specifies requirements and provides recommendations for the design, manufacture, testing and documentation of ball, check, gate and plug valves used in onshore and above-surface pipeline systems that comply with ISO 13623. This second-edition (2007) standard harmonizes international practice (including API 6D input) and is targeted at pipeline transportation systems in the petroleum and natural gas sectors. It is not applicable to subsea valves (see ISO 14723) or valves rated above PN 420 (Class 2 500).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Valve types & configurations: scope covers ball, check, gate and plug valves and associated configurations.
- Design requirements: allowable stresses, face-to-face/end-to-end dimensions, pressure‑temperature ratings, pigging provisions, travel stops, position indicators and actuator/drive-train interfaces.
- Materials & metallurgy: material specifications, composition limits, toughness testing, sour-service considerations and bolting requirements.
- Welding & repairs: welder qualification, impact and hardness testing, NDE of repairs and weld-end inspection.
- Quality control & NDE: non-destructive examination requirements, inspection personnel qualification, measurement and test equipment.
- Pressure testing: hydrostatic shell and seat tests, stem backseat tests, and requirements for draining and test documentation.
- Supplementary elements: coating, marking, preparation for shipment, documentation and purchaser/manufacturer agreement items.
- Annexes: normative NDE and supplementary test requirements (Annex A, B) and informative guidance for documentation, purchasing and marking (Annex C–E).
The standard supports both SI and USC units, specifies rounding rules and encourages application of a quality system (ISO/TS 29001 referenced).
Applications and users
ISO 14313:2007 is used by:
- Pipeline valve manufacturers to design and certify valves for oil and gas transmission.
- Pipeline operators and EPC contractors for specifying valve procurement and installation requirements.
- Quality, inspection and NDE personnel for test acceptance criteria.
- Procurement, engineering and regulatory teams to ensure compliance with pipeline system standards. Practical applications include transmission pipelines, meter stations, pigging facilities and valve station design where compatibility with ISO 13623 systems is required.
