ISO 14397-1:2007 specifies the means for determining the rated operating capacity of wheeled or crawler loaders or of the loader portion of backhoe loaders, having buckets and material handling forks, as defined in ISO 6165. It gives standard methods for the calculation and test verification of the tipping load (mass). It is applicable only to the use of buckets and forks on loaders.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 14397-1:2007 - Earth-moving machinery - Loaders and backhoe loaders - Part 1 specifies standardized methods to determine the rated operating capacity of wheeled or crawler loaders and the loader portion of backhoe loaders when used with buckets or material‑handling forks. It covers both the calculation of tipping load (mass) at maximum reach and a test method for verifying the calculated tipping load. This second edition (2007) updates and replaces the 2002 edition.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Applies only to loader use with buckets and forks (see ISO 6165 for machine definitions). Notes that some attachments may require restricted operating conditions.
- Rated operating capacity (N): Determined from the lesser of a stability-based calculation and lift-capacity limits. The standard defines how to calculate N using measured or calculated tipping loads and stability factors.
- Tipping load at maximum reach (m_tip): Defines the minimum mass placed at the bucket/fork load centre that causes the machine to reach the tipping limit in its least stable configuration on a hard, level surface.
- Stability factors (k): Prescribed stability factors for normal operation: 0.50 for wheeled machines and 0.35 for crawlers. These account for operating-surface and dynamic effects (tyre deflection, travel speed, etc.).
- Loader configurations: Detailed procedures for rigid‑frame, articulated‑frame, swing‑arm, Ackermann steering and crawler loaders, including bucket/fork positioning to produce maximum moment arm.
- Measurement & verification: Test methods to measure axle/wheel loads and verify calculated tipping loads, with required test equipment, measurement points and reporting formats.
- Definitions & symbols: Standardizes terms (tipping line, tipping limit condition, operating mass, maximum moment arm) and referenced measurement units/accuracies.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 14397-1:2007 is used by:
- Equipment manufacturers - to calculate and publish rated capacities and to define safe operating configurations in manuals and marketing materials.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies - for consistent verification of tipping loads and conformity testing.
- Fleet owners, rental companies and safety engineers - to compare machine capacities, assess safe operating limits and set operational policies.
- Design and R&D teams - to validate lift and stability performance during development and attachment integration.
Practical benefits include standardized capacity ratings, improved operator safety, consistent specification across markets, and clearer attachment usage requirements.
