This document specifies requirements for indicating linear sizes. This document establishes the default specification operator (see ISO 17450-2) and defines a special specification operator for linear sizes. This document is applicable to the following features of linear size (see ISO 17450-1): — cylinders; — spheres; — two parallel opposite planes. This document provides a set of tools to express several types of linear size characteristics. It does not present any information on the relationship between a function or a use and a linear size characteristic.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 14405-1:2025 – Geometrical product specifications (GPS) - Dimensional tolerancing - Part 1: Linear sizes provides a consistent framework for the indication and verification of linear size tolerances on technical drawings and CAD models. This standard, developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), outlines requirements and rules for specifying linear sizes, supporting the clear communication and interpretation of dimensional tolerances. By establishing specification operators and defining how linear sizes are to be quantified for various geometric features, ISO 14405-1 ensures uniformity and precision in the manufacturing and inspection of mechanical parts.
Key Topics
- Applicability: ISO 14405-1:2025 applies to cylinders, spheres, and two parallel opposite planes. These are primary features of linear size encountered in engineering and manufacturing.
- Specification Operators: This standard establishes a default specification operator and introduces a special specification operator for linear size, aligning with ISO 17450-2 requirements.
- Linear Size Definitions: Detailed definitions are provided for linear size, local and global linear sizes, section sizes, and portion sizes, ensuring clarity on how size characteristics are assessed and documented.
- Types of Linear Sizes:
- Two-point size
- Spherical size
- Least-squares size
- Maximum inscribed size
- Minimum circumscribed size
- Minimax size
- Calculated sizes (circumference, area, and volume diameters)
- Statistical sizes (maximum, minimum, average, median, mid-range, range, standard deviation)
- Modifiers and Symbols: The document specifies the required symbols and modifiers to correctly indicate each type of linear size and its associated feature(s).
- Special Cases: Annexes cover linear size specifications for circles as sections of cones or tori, and for parallel lines in cylindrical tubes, accommodating complex component geometries.
Applications
ISO 14405-1:2025 is a foundational standard for mechanical designers, drafters, manufacturers, and metrology professionals who need to specify and communicate dimensional tolerances accurately. Its applications include:
- Technical Drawings and 3D Models: Ensures that linear size indications are universally understood and interpreted, reducing errors and ambiguity.
- Inspection and Quality Control: Provides standardized criteria for verifying compliance with specified tolerances, improving quality assurance processes.
- Product Development: Facilitates clear translation of design intent to manufacturing by defining how linear sizes should be measured and reported.
- Manufacturing of Precision Components: Especially valuable for industries such as automotive, aerospace, tooling, and general machinery, where tight control over cylinder, sphere, and plane dimensions is critical.
Key practical benefits include interoperable product specifications, enhanced clarity between design and manufacturing teams, and synergy with digital workflows and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) systems.
Related Standards
ISO 14405-1:2025 fits within the broader Geometrical Product Specifications (GPS) system and is directly related to several other important international standards:
- ISO 286-1: Basis of tolerances, deviations, and fits for linear sizes.
- ISO 8015: Fundamentals and general rules for GPS.
- ISO 17450 (Parts 1, 2, 3): General concepts, specification operators, and toleranced features for GPS.
- ISO 14405-2: Differentiates linear, angular, and other dimension types; provides complementary rules.
- ISO 81714-1: Rules for the design of graphical symbols used in technical documentation.
- ISO 14638: Overview and matrix model of the ISO GPS system.
Implementing ISO 14405-1:2025 in conjunction with these related standards supports consistent dimensional specification from product definition to verification, aligning with global best practices in manufacturing and metrology.
By adhering to ISO 14405-1:2025, organizations improve the reliability and efficiency of their design, manufacturing, and inspection processes, ensuring products meet precisely defined requirements for linear sizes.
