ISO 14427:2004 describes the preparation of unbaked test specimens made by compacting carbonaceous ramming pastes. It also includes a method for the determination of the apparent density after compaction.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 14427:2004 specifies a standardized laboratory method for preparing unbaked test specimens from carbonaceous cold and tepid ramming pastes used in aluminium production and for determining their apparent density after compaction. The standard defines the compaction procedure, required apparatus, environmental conditioning, calculation of apparent density and reporting requirements used in quality control and materials testing.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Preparation of compacted, unbaked test specimens and determination of apparent density; specimens can subsequently be baked for further tests (dimensional change, properties of baked specimens).
- Apparatus (examples):
- Steel rammer cylinder (inner diameter 50 mm) and ram base
- Rammer with steel piston and falling weight (mass 6.35 kg; drop distance 50 ± 0.1 mm)
- Heating/cooling cabinet able to maintain ±0.5 °C in 5–100 °C
- Insulation layer or thermostatically controlled surround, balance (±0.1 g)
- Sampling: Follow ISO 14422 for sampling; typical required paste per specimen ~150–200 g.
- Conditioning: Paste, cylinder and accessories are thermostatted for 2–3 h at the agreed test temperature before compaction.
- Compaction procedure:
- Transfer paste to cylinder, protect with insulation
- Lower piston and apply 100 impacts at ~1 impact/s
- Target specimen height after compaction: 50 ± 5 mm; if outside this range, repeat using adjusted sample mass
- Apparent density calculation:
- ρ = m / (π · r^2 · h) where m = mass (g), r = inner radius (cm), h = height (cm)
- Round result to nearest 0.001 g·cm⁻³
- Precision (from interlaboratory study per ISO 5725-2):
- Repeatability (r) = 0.023 g·cm⁻³
- Reproducibility (R) = 0.042 g·cm⁻³
- Reporting: Include reference to ISO 14427:2004, sample ID, test temperature, apparent density result, date, and any unusual features or deviations.
Applications and users
ISO 14427:2004 is used for:
- Quality control of carbonaceous ramming pastes and refractories in aluminium smelting and casting plants
- Incoming material inspection by refractory and raw-material suppliers
- Laboratory testing by materials engineers, QC technicians, and independent testing laboratories
- Baseline measurement prior to baking to assess compaction behavior and to support subsequent tests (dimensional change, mechanical properties)
