ISO 14454-3:2013 specifies labelling requirements for pyrotechnic articles for vehicles.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 14451-3:2013 specifies the labelling requirements for pyrotechnic articles for vehicles. It is Part 3 of the ISO 14451 series and defines the minimum information that must appear on the product, its primary packaging or an attached label to ensure regulatory compliance, traceability and safe use.
Key Topics
- CE marking: The CE mark must be placed on the article itself, or on an attached label or the packaging when direct marking is not possible. The CE mark must be accompanied by the identification number of the notified body responsible for conformity assessment.
- Manufacturer / importer details: Labelling must include the name of the manufacturer or, where the manufacturer is not established in the target market, the name of the importer.
- Product identification: The label must state the name and type of the pyrotechnic article.
- Safety instructions: Mandatory safety information may be provided as text or pictograms. When pictograms are used they should conform to relevant international standards (for example ISO 701, ISO 2575 and ISO 3864).
- Registration number format: The standard prescribes a specific registration number format: XXXX-YY-ZZZZZZ, where:
- XXXX = identification number of the notified body issuing the type certificate,
- YY = category (P1 or P2),
- ZZZZZZ = a six-digit number assigned by the notified body.
- Small articles and semi‑finished products: If there is insufficient space on small parts, required information must be provided on the primary packaging. Semi‑finished products must carry required labelling on their primary packaging.
Applications
ISO 14451-3 is used to:
- Ensure consistent, compliant labelling of vehicle pyrotechnic components (e.g., gas generators, airbag modules, pretensioners, igniters and related components covered by the ISO 14451 series).
- Provide traceability and regulatory evidence for conformity assessment and market surveillance.
- Communicate safety instructions to installers, repairers and end-users through standardized pictograms and text. Typical users include manufacturers, importers, automotive suppliers, OEM compliance teams, notified bodies, quality managers and regulatory authorities.
Related Standards
- ISO 14451-1 (Terminology) and other parts of the ISO 14451 series (test methods and component-specific requirements).
- ISO 701, ISO 2575, ISO 3864 - referenced for pictograms, safety symbols and colour/signal conventions.
This concise labelling standard helps manufacturers and supply-chain stakeholders meet legal and safety obligations for pyrotechnic articles for vehicles while improving traceability and user safety.
