ISO 14451-5:2013 specifies the types and order of tests for application to the airbag gas generators and sets out the acceptance criteria and means of categorization. ISO 14451-5:2013 applies to type tests. ISO 14451-5:2013 is not applicable to articles containing military explosives or commercial blasting agents except for black powder or flash composition.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 14451-5:2013 - Pyrotechnic articles for vehicles - Part 5: Requirements and categorization for airbag gas generators defines the type test program, acceptance criteria and categorization rules for airbag gas generators (pyrotechnic inflators). The standard specifies the types and sequence of tests to verify design, safe functioning and end‑of‑life behaviour of airbag gas generators used in automotive passive safety systems. It does not apply to articles containing military explosives or commercial blasting agents, except black powder or flash composition.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and test sequencing: Specifies tests to be applied and the order (see the test matrix summarizing samples 1–13). Applicable to type tests only.
- Design and documentation verification: Documentation requirements referenced to ISO 14451-2 test-methods.
- Drop test: Acceptance - no ignition and no spill out of pyrotechnic composition.
- Vibration and temperature test: Acceptance - no ignition, no spill out.
- Thermal humidity cycling test: Acceptance - no ignition.
- Electrostatic discharge (ESD) test: Per ISO 14451-2; acceptance - no ignition. If igniters have already passed ISO 14451-8:2013, the ESD test can be considered passed for the generator.
- Fire test: Defined heating rate 50 K/min; generator must be completely engulfed by flames in specified positions. Acceptance - only foreseeable fragmentation or opening.
- Tank test: Acceptance - only intended fragmentation/opening and performance within manufacturer’s specified parameters.
- Functioning test: Tests in any position without fixation; multi‑stage delays are 5 ms or per product spec. Acceptance - only intended fragmentation/opening.
- Categorization: Two categories - P1 (low hazard) and P2 (requires specialist handling). Assignment is based on functioning test fragment distance: P1 if first impact distance ≤ 15 m, otherwise P2.
Practical applications
- Ensures safety and reliability of airbag inflators during manufacturing, type‑approval and design verification.
- Guides test laboratories on required test methods and acceptance criteria for automotive airbag components.
- Used by OEMs, suppliers and safety engineers for compliance, supplier qualification, and risk assessment.
- Supports homologation and regulatory submissions where documented type tests and categorization of pyrotechnic components are required.
Who should use this standard
- Automotive OEMs and Tier‑1 suppliers of restraint systems
- Component testing and certification laboratories
- Product safety and compliance engineers
- Design teams developing inflators and airbag modules
