This document specifies the test methods for the determination of the transmittance of telescopic systems and telescopic observational instruments.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 14490-5:2021 - "Optics and photonics - Test methods for telescopic systems - Part 5: Test methods for transmittance" specifies standardized procedures to determine the spectral transmittance of telescopic systems and telescopic observational instruments. It defines the measurement principle (ratio of emergent to incident flux), the required test arrangement (radiation source, monochromator/filters, collimator, aperture stop, integrating sphere, detector and signal processing) and the reporting and analysis needed to produce repeatable, traceable transmittance data.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: Spectral transmittance τ(λ) = Φp(λ) / Φ0(λ) measured across a controlled narrow wavelength band (monochromator or filters) or using a spectral detector.
- Wavelength range & color metrics: Measurements typically cover 380–780 nm; procedures and formulas are provided for effective transmittance for photopic and scotopic vision (including 10° observer functions).
- Test arrangement components: Specified roles for radiation source and condenser, monochromator or narrow-band filters (FWHM < 20 nm possible), collimator, aperture stop, specimen mounting, integrating sphere and radiation detector.
- Performance limits and tolerances:
- Source flux variation < 1% during paired measurements.
- Detector/signal processing linearity better than 0.5%.
- Monochromator adjustable interval < 2% of dominant wavelength; spectral bandwidth chosen so transmittance across band changes < 4% (max allowable 4%).
- Integrating sphere internal reflectance ≥ 85% across 380–780 nm; sphere openings ≤ 5% of internal surface; input opening > aperture stop diameter by 5–7%.
- Aperture stop diameter ≤ 50% of the specimen entrance pupil; selectable diaphragm to limit angular extension to ≤ 5° for eyepiece side.
- Procedure and reporting: Preparation, measurement with/without specimen, calibration guidance (Annex A), trichromatic coefficients and colour contribution indices (Annex B), precision and test report content requirements.
Applications and users
ISO 14490-5:2021 is used by:
- Optical engineers and test laboratories validating telescopes, spotting scopes, binoculars and other telescopic observational instruments.
- Manufacturers performing quality control and R&D on coatings, glass materials and optical assemblies to quantify throughput and color-related transmission.
- Procurement, certification and military/astronomical instrument evaluation teams requiring standardized, comparable transmittance data for specification compliance.
Practical benefits include consistent spectral transmittance curves, reliable photopic/scotopic performance metrics, and traceable test reports for product development, acceptance testing and performance benchmarking.
