ISO 1452-4:2009 specifies the characteristics of valves made from unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC‑U) for piping systems intended for water supply and for buried and above-ground drainage and sewerage under pressure. It also specifies the test parameters for the test methods referred to. In conjunction with ISO 1452-1, ISO 1452-2, ISO 1452-3 and ISO 1452-5 it is applicable to PVC‑U valves with components of PVC-U, other plastics and non-plastics materials intended to be used for the following: - water mains and services buried in ground; - conveyance of water above ground for both outside and inside buildings; - buried and above-ground drainage and sewerage under pressure. It is applicable to valves in piping systems intended for the supply of water under pressure up to and including 25 °C (cold water) intended for human consumption and for general purposes as well as for waste water under pressure. It is also applicable to valves for the conveyance of water and waste water up to and including 45 °C.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 1452-4:2009 defines requirements for PVC‑U (unplasticized polyvinyl chloride) valves used in plastics piping systems for water supply and for buried and above‑ground drainage and sewerage under pressure. It specifies material, geometric, mechanical, physical and chemical characteristics, and the test parameters for methods referenced. The part applies together with ISO 1452‑1, ‑2, ‑3 and ‑5 to valves intended for water mains, above‑ground conveyance, and pressure drainage/sewerage - for cold water up to 25 °C and for water/wastewater up to 45 °C.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Covers PVC‑U valves with components of PVC‑U, other plastics and non‑plastics for solvent‑cemented, elastomeric ring seal and flanged joints.
- Materials:
- Valve body material must conform to ISO 1452‑1.
- Density requirement for valve bodies: 1 350–1 460 kg/m3 (measured per ISO 1183‑1).
- Minimum Required Strength (MRS) must be declared and confirmed by testing.
- Geometrical characteristics:
- Dimensions and nominal diameters follow ISO 3126 and ISO 1452‑2/‑3 conventions.
- Socket, spigot and flange mating dimensions are specified to match pipes and fittings.
- Mechanical and performance tests:
- Resistance to internal pressure, crushing (maximum deformation), durability and functional tests are specified with reference test methods (e.g., ISO 1167 series, EN 802).
- Physical and optical properties:
- Injection‑moulded valve bodies: grey throughout and opaque (≤ 0.2% visible light transmission per ISO 7686).
- Sealing, adhesives and marking:
- Requirements for sealing rings and adhesives to ensure system fitness (see ISO 1452‑5).
- Minimum and additional marking requirements are specified for traceability and correct selection.
Applications and who uses this standard
ISO 1452‑4:2009 is used by:
- Manufacturers of PVC‑U valves and components to design, test and certify products.
- Specifiers and procurement teams in water utilities, municipal sewerage, and building services to select compliant valves.
- Engineers and designers involved in water distribution, buried mains and pressure drainage systems.
- Test laboratories and conformity assessors executing the referenced test methods and documenting MRS/density/marking. Note: the standard does not by itself determine national regulatory acceptance for potable water - users must consider local regulations.
