ISO 14520-12:2015 contains specific requirements for gaseous fire-extinguishing systems, with respect to the IG-01 extinguishant. It includes details of physical properties, specification, usage, and safety aspects. ISO 14520-12:2015 covers systems operating at nominal pressures of 160 bar, 200 bar, and 300 bar at 15 °C. This does not preclude the use of other systems, although design data for other pressures are not available at this time.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 14520-12:2015 defines requirements for gaseous fire‑extinguishing systems that use the IG‑01 extinguishant (argon). Part of the ISO 14520 series, this standard specifies the physical properties, specification, usage, safety and system design data needed to design and apply IG‑01 total‑flooding systems. It covers systems operating at nominal fill pressures of 160 bar, 200 bar, and 300 bar (at 15 °C) and provides agent quantity tables, design concentrations and container pressure/temperature guidance. Key environmental attributes: IG‑01 is an inert gas with zero GWP and zero ODP.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Chemical and physical data: IG‑01 (Ar, molecular mass 39.9) - boiling point (~–185.9 °C), freezing point, critical properties and vapour volumes are given to support design calculations.
- Specification: Minimum purity 99.9% by volume and limits on contaminants; product quality tables included.
- Extinguishing method: IG‑01 extinguishes primarily by oxygen reduction (inerting/total flooding).
- Design concentrations: Reference extinguishing and minimum design concentrations are listed for fuels (e.g., heptane, Class A surface fuels). A safety factor (1.3 on extinguishing concentration) is applied to derive design concentrations.
- Agent quantity tables: Tabled V/V agent volume requirements across temperatures and target concentrations allow calculation of the mass/volume of IG‑01 required per cubic metre of protected enclosure.
- Safety limits for personnel: Physiological guidance (NOAEL = 43% by volume, LOAEL = 52% by volume) with the associated oxygen equivalents (≈12% and 10% O2 respectively) - system design must consider hazards from oxygen depletion and fire combustion products.
- System and container design: Fill pressures and maximum working pressures for 160/200/300 bar containers at reference temperatures are specified; containers are not superpressurized.
- Environmental properties: IG‑01 is inert and climate‑friendly (zero GWP/ODP).
Applications and who uses it
ISO 14520‑12:2015 is intended for:
- Fire protection engineers and system designers specifying total‑flooding gaseous systems using argon (IG‑01)
- Risk assessors and safety consultants evaluating oxygen‑reduction systems
- Manufacturers, suppliers and installers of high‑pressure IG‑01 storage and distribution systems
- Authorities having jurisdiction and code officials reviewing inert gas fire suppression installations
Typical applications include server rooms, electrical switchgear enclosures, archives and other enclosed hazards where rapid total flooding with an inert gas is appropriate.
Related standards
- ISO 14520‑1:2006 - General requirements (normative reference)
- Other parts of the ISO 14520 series covering alternative agents (e.g., IG‑100, IG‑55, IG‑541, HFC and FK agents)
For implementation use ISO 14520‑12 together with ISO 14520‑1 design methods, local codes and manufacturer guidance when specifying IG‑01 gaseous fire‑extinguishing systems.
