This part of ISO 14528 specifies the requirements for the physical and chemical properties of melamineformaldehyde powder moulding compounds (MF-PMCs) and compression- or injection-moulded test specimens produced from them. It is limited to those powder moulding compounds whose composition and properties are significantly different. It is further limited to those moulding compounds which are of general technical and/or economic importance. The properties which are used to characterize the moulding compounds, the test methods and the test conditions are selected from those given in ISO 14528-2. The moulding compounds are divided into types according to their composition and properties. The various types are designated using the designation system defined in ISO 14528-1.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 14528-3:1999 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that defines the requirements for selected melamine-formaldehyde powder moulding compounds (MF-PMCs). This part of ISO 14528 focuses specifically on specifying the key physical and chemical properties of MF-PMCs and the compression or injection-moulded test specimens produced from these compounds. It applies exclusively to powder moulding compounds whose composition and characteristics differ significantly and are of notable technical or economic importance.
The standard sets out criteria including mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties, utilizing test methods referenced from ISO 14528-2. Additionally, it establishes a classification system aligned with ISO 14528-1 for designating different MF-PMC types based on their composition and property profiles. This structured approach aids manufacturers, researchers, and end-users in ensuring quality, compatibility, and performance consistency of melamine-formaldehyde powder moulding materials.
Key Topics
-
Physical and Chemical Property Requirements
The standard details specific values and tolerance ranges for properties such as:- Tensile and flexural strength
- Charpy impact resistance (both unnotched and notched specimens)
- Heat deflection temperature under varying loads
- Flame resistance levels
- Electrical properties including dissipation factor, resistivity, and tracking index
- Water absorption and formaldehyde extractability
-
Material Classification and Designation
MF-PMCs are categorized based on their filler materials (e.g., low-density or wood fillers, glass fibers, mineral fillers), with each classification having defined property requirements and designations structured under ISO 14528-1. -
Testing Methodology and Conditions
Test specimen preparation and property determination are conducted following protocols listed in ISO 14528-2. Rheological and processing behavior properties require joint agreement between suppliers and users for application-specific suitability. -
Conformance and Performance Criteria
Detailed tables outline the minimum and maximum acceptable property values for different compound types, ensuring materials meet stringent mechanical, thermal, and electrical requirements.
Applications
ISO 14528-3:1999 is essential for industries utilizing melamine-formaldehyde powder moulding compounds in high-performance applications, including:
-
Electrical and Electronic Components
Due to the excellent electrical insulation and thermal stability of MF-PMCs, this standard ensures materials meet rigorous safety and performance standards in electrical housings and insulators. -
Automotive and Industrial Parts
The mechanical strength, impact resistance, and thermal properties of MF-PMCs classified under this standard support their use in durable automotive components and industrial tooling where precision moulding and reliability are critical. -
Consumer Goods and Household Appliances
Moulded melamine-formaldehyde parts for kitchenware, switches, and other household items benefit from standardized properties, guaranteeing product safety and longevity. -
Quality Control and Supplier Selection
Manufacturers and procurement specialists use the standard to specify compound performance criteria in purchasing agreements and material qualification procedures.
Related Standards
ISO 14528-3:1999 complements other parts of the ISO 14528 series and related standards that together create a framework for specifying and testing MF-PMCs:
- ISO 14528-1:1999 – System of designation and specification basis for MF-PMCs
- ISO 14528-2:1999 – Test specimen preparation and property determination methods
- ISO 2112:1990 – Specification for amino plastic moulding compounds (serves as a technical precursor to ISO 14528 series)
- ISO 472:1999 – Plastics vocabulary for standardized terminology
Conformance to ISO 14528-3 supports compliance with international best practices and harmonizes the use of melamine-formaldehyde powder moulding compounds in technical and economic sectors worldwide.
