Overview
ISO 14555:2017 - Welding - Arc stud welding of metallic materials - is the international standard that defines requirements for arc stud welding used in applications subject to static and fatigue loading. It addresses the specific needs of stud welding beyond general fusion welding quality, covering technical competence, procedure documentation, qualification testing and production testing. ISO 14555:2017 is written for use in contracts and can be applied in full or partially (see Annex B); processing guidance is provided in Annex A. The standard is often used to demonstrate a manufacturer’s capability to produce stud-welded assemblies to a specified quality.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope & purpose: Arc stud welding of metallic materials for static and fatigue-loaded constructions.
- Welding knowledge & coordination: Requirements for welding personnel, operator qualification and welding coordination.
- Equipment & maintenance: Specifications for production equipment, welding guns, power sources, feeding systems and maintenance.
- Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) & WPQR: Detailed WPS content and the Welding Procedure Qualification Record (WPQR) requirements for validating procedures.
- Qualification & testing:
- Welding procedure qualification tests and ranges of qualification
- Pre-production tests (workshop and on-site)
- Operator qualification and re-testing
- Examination and acceptance:
- Visual examination, bend testing, tensile testing, torque testing, macro and radiographic examination, ring tests
- Defined acceptance criteria and re-test rules
- Process control & production surveillance: Production tests, simplified production tests, parameter checks and ongoing surveillance.
- Thermal and post-weld treatments: Thermal conditions, post-weld heat-treatment and non-thermal post-weld treatments where applicable.
- Workmanship & documentation: Requirements for traceability, documentation and quality records.
Applications
ISO 14555:2017 applies where stud-welded attachments must meet reliable mechanical performance under static or cyclic loads. Typical applications include:
- Structural steel connections and composite decking (through-deck stud welding)
- Shipbuilding, offshore and marine structures
- Heavy machinery and equipment assembly
- Construction and civil engineering components requiring high fatigue performance
Who should use this standard
- Manufacturers and fabricators performing arc stud welding
- Welding coordinators, quality managers and inspectors
- Welding procedure engineers preparing WPS/WPQR
- Contracting parties specifying weld quality for procurement and certification
