Overview
ISO 14555:2025 - Welding - Arc stud welding of metallic materials - is the fifth edition of the international standard that defines requirements for arc stud welding used in welded construction subject to static and fatigue loading. It specifies stud‑welding-specific requirements for welding knowledge, welding procedure specification (WPS), welding procedure qualification (WPQR), operator qualification, production testing and quality control. The standard is written to be used as a contractual reference and can be adopted in full or partially where certain requirements are not applicable (see Annex A). It also defines the practical working range of stud welding (Annex B).
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and applicability: Arc stud welding for metallic materials under static/fatigue loads; suitable where manufacturer capability must be demonstrated.
- Welding personnel: Qualification criteria for stud‑welding operators and welding coordination responsibilities.
- Equipment & maintenance: Requirements for production equipment, welding guns/lift mechanisms, stud feeding and shielding gas systems.
- Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) & WPQR: Information to include on WPS (manufacturer, parent material, studs, welding variables, thermal/post‑weld treatments) and procedures for qualification.
- Qualification methods: Qualification by tests (including pre‑production/site tests such as through‑deck stud welding) and by previous experience.
- Examination & testing: Mandatory tests and inspections - visual examination, bend tests, tensile tests, macro and radiographic examinations, ring tests - with acceptance criteria and re‑testing rules.
- Process control & production testing: Production tests, simplified production tests, surveillance, and controls for consistent weld quality.
- Workmanship & documentation: Requirements for traceability, production records, WPQR documentation and contract use.
Applications
ISO 14555:2025 is used to ensure reliable stud welds where structural integrity matters, particularly in applications subject to fatigue and static loading. Typical use cases include:
- Steel deck and through‑deck stud welding for composite floors and ship decks
- Structural steel fabrication where shear connectors or studs are used
- Prequalified stud welding in construction and heavy manufacturing
- Situations requiring contractual proof of welding capability and quality
Who should use this standard
- Manufacturers and fabricators performing arc stud welding
- Welding engineers and welding coordinators preparing WPS/WPQR
- Quality managers, inspectors and third‑party conformity assessors
- Contractors and specifiers writing contract requirements
- Welding training organisations and operator qualification bodies
