This document gives guidance and recommendations for optimizing energy usage and maintaining energy efficiency in new and existing cleanrooms, clean zones and separative devices. It provides guidance for the design, construction, commissioning and operation of cleanrooms. This document covers all cleanroom-specific features and can be used in different areas to optimize energy use in electronic, aerospace, nuclear, pharmaceutical, hospital, medical device, food industries and other clean air applications. It also introduces the concept of benchmarking for the performance assessment and comparison of cleanroom energy efficiencies, while maintaining performance levels to ISO 14644 requirements[2][3].
Abstract
Overview
ISO 14644-16:2019 - Cleanrooms and associated controlled environments - Part 16: Energy efficiency in cleanrooms and separative devices - provides guidance and recommendations to optimize energy use and maintain energy efficiency across new and existing cleanrooms, clean zones and separative devices. The standard covers design, construction, commissioning and operation of cleanrooms and introduces benchmarking for assessing and comparing cleanroom energy performance while maintaining ISO 14644 cleanliness requirements.
Keywords: ISO 14644-16, cleanroom energy efficiency, separative devices, clean zones, energy benchmarking, HVAC for cleanrooms.
Key Topics
- Energy reduction evaluation process: staged approach for new builds and existing facilities (design review, retrofit planning, business case, monitoring).
- Airflow and ventilation: guidance on airflow volume, fresh air supply, ventilation effectiveness, compensation factors and methods for non-unidirectional and unidirectional systems.
- HVAC, fans and filtration: selection and management of air movement fans, high-efficiency filters and their impact on pressure differentials and energy use (fans can account for 35–50% of HVAC energy; high‑quality air may account for up to 80% of facility energy).
- Power management: turn-down, turn-off and recovery strategies to reduce runtime energy consumption.
- Adaptive control: use of control strategies to match environmental conditions to operational need.
- Thermal loads and lighting: advice on heating/cooling load reduction and efficient lighting levels.
- Operation, maintenance and training: procedures for sustained energy performance, including monitoring, maintenance and staff training.
- Benchmarking and indicators: performance assessment methods and energy performance indicators (see informative Annex D).
- Lifecycle considerations: retrofit, commissioning, operational monitoring and decommissioning guidance.
Applications and Users
