ISO 14704:2016 specifies a test method for determining the flexural strength of monolithic fine ceramics, and whisker- or particulate-reinforced ceramic composites, at room temperature and applies to materials with grain size less than 200 µm. This test method may be used for materials development, quality control, characterization and design data-generation purposes. NOTE Since fracture is due to tensile stress, flexural strength data can be used to calculate a uniaxial tensile strength considering the effect of the tested volume and Weibull-statistics. So, flexural strength is often used in substitute for uniaxial tensile strength.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 14704:2016 - Fine ceramics (advanced ceramics, advanced technical ceramics) - Test method for flexural strength of monolithic ceramics at room temperature - specifies a standardized procedure to determine the flexural strength of monolithic fine ceramics and whisker- or particulate-reinforced ceramic composites at room temperature. It applies to materials with grain size < 200 µm and is intended for materials development, quality control, characterization and design data-generation. Because fracture in bending is caused by tensile stress, flexural strength data can be used as a substitute for uniaxial tensile strength when corrected for tested volume and Weibull statistics.
Key topics and requirements
- Test configurations: Three-point and four-point flexure; the four-point (1/4 point) configuration is recommended to expose more material to maximum stress.
- Test pieces: Rectangular beam specimens (machined, as-fired or heat-treated) with specified dimensions, parallelism and chamfers; handling and number of test pieces are defined.
- Fixtures and bearings: Semi- and fully-articulating fixtures to ensure uniform loading on flat or uneven surfaces; bearings must roll freely to eliminate frictional constraints.
- Bearing material and geometry: Steel hardness minimums (e.g., HRC 40 for strengths up to ~1 400 MPa, HRC 46 up to ~2 000 MPa) or hardmetal/ceramic alternatives; bearing length ≥ 12 mm; recommended bearing diameters ~1.5× specimen thickness (typical 4.5–5 mm) and uniformity to ±0.015 mm.
- Testing machine accuracy: Force-measuring system accuracy in accordance with ISO 7500-1, Class 1 (about 1% of indicated load at fracture).
- Calculations and reporting: Procedures for computing flexural strength from fracture load, dimensions and fixture geometry; guidance on test report contents.
- Corrections and scaling: Annexes include chamfer correction factors, Weibull scaling factors, strength-scaling factors and typical fracture patterns to aid interpretation.
Practical applications and users
ISO 14704:2016 is used by:
- Materials R&D teams developing advanced ceramics and ceramic composites
- Quality control and QA laboratories verifying batch-to-batch strength
- Mechanical designers and engineers requiring reliable design data or substitute tensile-strength values
- Independent test laboratories certifying ceramic components
- Manufacturers of bearings, fixtures and test equipment ensuring compliance with standardized methods
Typical uses include mechanical characterization during development, acceptance testing of production lots, and generating data for Weibull-based reliability and design assessments.
