ISO 14714:1998 specifies a laboratory method for the determination of residual benzene in essential oils and aromatic extracts using static headspace gas chromatography (SHS‑GC). The method is intended for low-level benzene residues (around 10 ppm) in the analysed product and covers the technique, calibration, operating conditions and accuracy performance characteristics.

- Calibration curve validation required before each analysis by an independently weighed validation solution.
- Accuracy/performance:
- Repeatability: in not more than 5% of cases, two results in the same lab will differ by more than 6.5%.
- Reproducibility: in not more than 5% of cases, results between different labs will differ by more than 13.5%.
- Headspace injection: can be performed with a manual gas syringe (leaktight) or an automatic injector.
