ISO 14793:2011 specifies test methods for determining the transient response behaviour of heavy commercial vehicles, heavy commercial vehicle combinations, buses and articulated buses, as defined in ISO 3833 for trucks and trailers above 3,5 t and buses above 5 t maximum weight, and in UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) and EC vehicle classification, categories M3, N2, N3, O3 and O4.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 14793:2011 - Road vehicles: Heavy commercial vehicles and buses - Lateral transient response test methods defines standardized test procedures to quantify the transient lateral response behaviour of heavy trucks, truck combinations, buses and articulated buses (vehicle categories M3, N2, N3, O3, O4). The standard describes repeatable open‑loop steering inputs and measurement methods that produce discriminatory, comparable data on how vehicles respond in the time and frequency domains. These tests are intended for controlled laboratory and track evaluation of vehicle dynamics (not as direct representations of real driving).
Key topics and requirements
- Scope & objective: Measure transient characteristics (time lag, response time, gains, overshoot; and transfer functions of lateral acceleration and yaw velocity vs steering input).
- Test inputs: Time‑domain and frequency‑domain procedures including step input, one‑period sinusoid, pseudo‑random (random) input, pulse input, and continuous sinusoidal input.
- Reference system & variables: Uses the intermediate vehicle axis system (X, Y, Z). Mandatory measured variables: yaw velocity (ψ), lateral acceleration (aY), steering‑wheel angle (δH), longitudinal velocity (vX). Optional: lateral deviation, roll angle, steering torque, sideslip angle.
- Measuring equipment & accuracy: Multi‑channel recording with time base. Typical ranges and recommended maximum errors (examples from Table 1):
- Yaw velocity: −50°/s to +50°/s; error ±0.5°/s
- Lateral acceleration: −15 m/s² to +15 m/s²; error ±0.15 m/s²
- Steering‑wheel angle: −360° to +360°; error ±2° (<180°), ±4° (>180°)
- Longitudinal velocity: 0–35 m/s; error ±0.35 m/s
- Steering‑wheel torque (without power steering): −50 to +50 N·m; error ±0.5 N·m
- Data processing: Frequency range of interest 0 Hz to 2 Hz (can be increased to 3 Hz for lighter trucks). Analog systems require ≥8 Hz bandwidth and fourth‑order (or higher) low‑pass filtering; digital processing is preferred to avoid phase shift issues.
- Test conditions: Defines track, weather, vehicle preparation (warm‑up), test speed, lateral and longitudinal acceleration limits, and required reporting formats (normative annexes).
Applications and users
ISO 14793:2011 is used by:
- Vehicle manufacturers and chassis/handling engineers for design validation and tuning
- Automotive test laboratories and proving grounds for standardized handling tests
- Safety engineers and researchers analyzing vehicle stability, steerability and transient response
- Regulators and certification bodies when correlating handling metrics with safety criteria (note: standard cautions that direct regulatory application requires proven correlation with accident data)
Practical applications include comparative handling evaluation, suspension and steering system development, and objective assessment after modifications or retrofits.
