This part of ISO 14824 describes the test methods for grout specified in ISO 14824-1. The test methods are applicable to grout for all types of structures, including bridges and buildings.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 14824-3:2012 - Grout for prestressing tendons - Part 3: Test methods specifies reference test methods for grout used in prestressed and post-tensioned concrete. It supports the requirements set out in ISO 14824-1 (basic requirements) and is applicable to grout for all types of structures, including bridges and buildings. The standard defines how to evaluate grout properties such as fluidity, bleeding and volume stability, and sets expectations for competent testing and reporting.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and personnel
- Tests apply to grout mixes defined in ISO 14824-1. Testing must be performed by competent, experienced personnel and under temperatures specified in ISO 14824-1.
- Testing regimes
- Three levels are anticipated: initial type/audit testing, project-specific suitability testing, and production inspection on site (per ISO 14824-2).
- Mandatory test reporting
- Test reports must include identification of the laboratory, product, mix and specimen dates, ambient and grout temperatures, batching and mixing procedures, equipment identification and calibration, individual test results, and responsible signatory.
- Reference test methods (selected)
- Sieve test - check for lumps using a 150 mm sieve (aperture ≤ 2 mm); pour ≥1 L fresh grout.
- Fluidity tests - two methods (only one required depending on grout):
- Cone method - measure time for 1 L to pass through a conical orifice (cone volume ≈1.7 L).
- Grout spread method - measure spread diameter on a smooth plate for thixotropic grouts.
- Inclined tube test - full-scale assessment of bleed, volume stability and filtering effects of strands using long transparent inclined tubes with multiple strands; measures water/air accumulation and effects of re-grouting.
- Wick-induced test - vertical tube test providing both bleeding and volume-change data and observing segregation or inhomogeneities.
Applications and users
- Intended for contractors, prestressing/subcontracting firms, material suppliers, testing laboratories, structural engineers and QA/QC teams responsible for post-tensioning and prestressed concrete works.
- Practical uses:
- Verifying grout suitability before and during site grouting operations.
- Ensuring grout fluidity, minimal bleeding and volume stability for long-term tendon protection.
- Supporting specifications, acceptance testing and troubleshooting in bridge and building construction.
