ISO 14829 specifies the calculations to be carried out to determine the stability of a straddle carrier. The stability calculations specified in this International Standard are intended to ensure that users of straddle carriers have adequate information about the behaviour of these carriers under various operating conditions. Stability warning and control devices are not covered by this International Standard.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 14829:2002 - "Freight containers - Straddle carriers for freight container handling - Calculation of stability" defines the calculations and criteria to determine the static and dynamic stability of straddle carriers used for handling freight containers. The standard specifies required load cases, coordinate determination, variable dimensions, and formulae for transverse and longitudinal stability assessments. It is focused on providing users and designers with consistent, reproducible stability data; stability warning and control devices are not covered.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Load cases and masses: Prescribed load conditions include a fully laden container (30 480 kg), a tare container (5 000 kg), and several “no container” positions (spreader top, underside, lowest).
- Stability ratios: Minimum safety ratios are defined:
- Transverse (Ct): 1.25 for load cases 1–4; 1.10 for load case 5 (out-of-service).
- Longitudinal (Cl): 1.15 for load case 1.
- Forces and moments: The standard requires calculation of righting and tipping moments including contributions from centrifugal force, braking deceleration, wind loads and vehicle mass distribution.
- Variable factors to include:
- Wind load and direction (wind speed reference 20 m/s per ISO 4302)
- Ground slope (default 2 %)
- Tyre, suspension and structural deflection
- Turning radius and travel speed (speed at ground plane of carrier center)
- Eccentric load distributions (content loading per ISO 3874)
- Operator mass (90 kg) and fluid tank fill conditions
- Coordinate system and formulae: Coordinates (x, y, z) for centre of gravity calculations, transverse and longitudinal variable dimensions, iterative treatment of COG shifts and explicit formulae for stability ratios and tipping moments.
- Presentation of results: Requirements for documenting calculation outcomes and reporting the conditions under which the carrier is stable.
Practical applications
- Design verification and certification of new straddle carriers to ensure safe operating envelopes.
- Development of operating limits for terminals (max cornering speed, allowable wind limits, slope restrictions).
- Risk assessments and safety documentation used by OEMs, terminal operators, inspectors and regulatory bodies.
- Input for training materials and maintenance checks where stability-affecting components (tyres, suspension, structure) are monitored.
Who should use this standard
- Equipment designers and manufacturers (OEMs)
- Port and terminal operators and planners
- Safety engineers, certifying bodies and compliance officers
- Maintenance engineers and training coordinators
