This document specifies requirements and guidelines for the analysis of lubricating oils, hydraulic fluids, synthetic fluids and greases. Tests for electrical insulating oils and heat transfer oil are outside the scope of this document.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 14830-1:2019 - Condition monitoring and diagnostics of machine systems - Tribology-based monitoring and diagnostics - Part 1: General requirements and guidelines - defines general requirements and guidance for lubricant analysis used in machine condition monitoring. The standard covers analysis of lubricating oils, hydraulic fluids, synthetic fluids and greases to assess lubricant condition, contamination and wear debris. Tests for electrical insulating oils and heat transfer oils are explicitly outside the scope.
This part of the ISO 14830 series provides a framework for tribology‑based monitoring (also called oil analysis or lubricant analysis) as a key element of asset management and predictive maintenance programs.
Key topics and requirements
ISO 14830-1 organizes practical guidance around these technical topics:
- Lubricant and wear-particle analysis - objectives, information to be derived (lubricant properties, contamination, wear).
- Measurement parameters and test suites - recommended parameters and typical test suites (see Annexes A and B).
- Sampling - objectives, pressurized vs static sample points, on-line/in-line sampling, magnetic plug and grease sampling (Annex C contains examples).
- Sampling equipment and transport - containers, tubing, hand pumps and sample handling best practices.
- Sample analysis - on-site vs off-site laboratory testing, documentation and chain-of-custody.
- Alarm criteria, diagnosis and prognosis - guidance for setting alarm thresholds and performing diagnostic/prognostic interpretation (Annexes F and G).
- Results reporting - standardized reporting to support maintenance decisions.
- Personnel qualifications - competence requirements for field and laboratory analysts; cross-references to ISO 18436‑4 and ISO 18436‑5.
The standard emphasizes accuracy, repeatability and the role of correct sampling procedures and analyst competence in producing reliable lubricant analysis results.
Applications
ISO 14830-1 is intended for organizations and professionals implementing tribology-based condition monitoring, including:
- Predictive maintenance programs for gearboxes, pumps, turbines, compressors, engines and hydraulic systems
- Asset management teams integrating lubricant analysis into ISO 55000-series frameworks
- Reliability engineers, maintenance technicians and laboratory analysts
- OEMs, service providers and industrial users in mining, transportation, manufacturing and power generation
Practical benefits include early detection of lubricant degradation, contamination control, root-cause identification of tribological failures, and improved machine uptime.
