This document specifies the basic specifications and testing requirements for ISO series 1 tank containers suitable for the carriage of gases, liquids and solid substances (dry bulk) which can be loaded or unloaded as liquids by gravity or pressure discharge, for international exchange and for conveyance by road, rail and sea, including interchange between these forms of transport. Except where otherwise stated, the requirements of this document are minimum requirements.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 1496-3:2019 (Tank containers)
ISO 1496-3:2019 is the fifth edition of the International Standard that defines Series 1 tank containers used for the carriage of liquids, gases and pressurized dry bulk. It sets the minimum specifications and testing requirements for tank containers intended for international interchange and multimodal transport - road, rail and sea. The standard covers design, construction, identification and a suite of mechanical and pressure tests to verify container integrity and suitability for safe carriage.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Series 1 tank containers for substances that can be loaded/unloaded as liquids by gravity or pressure discharge; requirements are minimums unless stated otherwise.
- Design requirements: Rules for tank construction, corrosion allowance, tank openings, pressure and vacuum relief devices, inspection/maintenance openings, gauging and sealing (customs). Includes requirements for corner fittings, base, end and side structures and optional features (walkways, ladders, insulation, heating/refrigeration).
- Dimensions and ratings: External dimensions and rating definitions consistent with intermodal interchange. (Referenced revisions align container codes and ratings with ISO 6346 and ISO 668.)
- Testing program: A comprehensive set of tests to demonstrate structural and operational capability, including:
- Stacking and rigidity (transverse/longitudinal) tests
- Lifting tests (top and bottom corner fittings)
- Internal and external restraint tests (longitudinal and lateral)
- Load-transfer area verification
- Dynamic impact testing (Annex B)
- Pressure testing (integrity/relief devices)
- Walkway and ladder strength tests
- Identification and marking: Requirements for marking to support traceability and interchange.
Applications - who uses ISO 1496-3:2019
- Container manufacturers and designers - to design and certify compliant tank containers.
- Tank leasing and fleet operators - to ensure equipment meets international interchange and safety requirements.
- Shippers, freight forwarders and carriers - to select suitable tank containers for hazardous and non-hazardous liquids, gases and pressurized dry bulk.
- Certification bodies and regulators - for inspection, testing and conformity assessment.
- Ports, terminals and logistics providers - to confirm compatibility for multimodal handling and stacking.
Related standards
- ISO 1496 (Series 1 freight containers general series)
- ISO 6346 (Container identification and marking) - referenced for container type codes
- ISO 668 (Classification, dimensions and ratings of series 1 freight containers) - referenced for ratings and stacking forces
ISO 1496-3:2019 is essential for safe, standardized interchange of tank containers in global supply chains and for ensuring structural and pressure integrity across road, rail and sea transport.
