This document specifies test methods for clamp-in tubeless tyre valves. These methods are defined to determine the minimum level of performance requested. This document applies to the tyre valve assembled on the rim hole with diameter of 11,3 mm for passenger cars or for light duty vehicles. This document does not include tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) valves.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 14960-2:2024 - Tubeless tyres - Valves and components - Part 2: Clamp-in tubeless tyre valve - Test methods defines standardized test methods to verify the minimum performance of clamp‑in tubeless tyre valves used on passenger cars and light‑duty vehicles. It applies to valves fitted to an rim hole diameter of 11.3 mm and excludes tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) valves. The standard establishes procedures for leakage, mechanical and environmental resistance, and component endurance to ensure reliable, leak‑tight valve assemblies.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test fixture and valve hole: Rim or fixture material shall be aluminium alloy or steel; valve hole edges chamfered or radiused (0.3–0.4 mm). Nominal hole diameter: 11.3 mm.
- Leakage limits and methods: Immersion bubble tests with valve mouth up/down (immersion ≤100 mm). Acceptable leak rate: 0.2 cm³/min (≈ 14 bubbles/min at 3 mm or 1 bubble/min at ~7 mm). Tests specify liquid, pressure and time per condition.
- Valve core tests:
- Pin height tolerance: −0.90 mm to +0.25 mm relative to valve mouth.
- Standard tightening torque: 0.34–0.56 Nm (metallic seal), 0.23–0.56 Nm (non‑metallic gasket).
- Leakage at room (23 °C ±5 °C), low (−40 °C ±3 °C, immersion in ethanol/methanol) and high (100 °C ±3 °C soak, 66 °C immersion) temperatures.
- Over‑torque resistance: core torqued to twice max torque - core must come out intact.
- Endurance: 120 depressions in 10 min ±3 min at maximum operating pressure.
- Valve to rim seal tests: Dedicated procedures for room, low, high and peak temperature leakage assessment.
- Mechanical resistance: Over‑torque nut test, high pressure test, and radial force (nose) resistance.
- Environmental resistance: Ozone exposure and neutral salt spray (NSS) corrosion testing as specified.
- Operating pressures: Nominal 0–830 kPa; default maximum operating pressure up to 1 400 kPa per ISO 9413 for certain valve types (CQ07/CQ08), unless otherwise specified by manufacturer.
- Sampling: Representative sample sizes recommended (e.g., 5 samples) and tests to be performed on unused assemblies.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 14960-2:2024 is essential for:
- Valve manufacturers and component designers validating clamp‑in valve performance
- Wheel and tyre manufacturers integrating valve assemblies
- Automotive OEMs and aftermarket suppliers specifying valve durability and leak tightness
- Test laboratories and certification bodies performing conformity and quality assurance testing
- Procurement and quality teams ensuring compliance with international test methods
Practical benefits include improved leak reliability, longer service life under environmental and mechanical stress, and a harmonized testing basis for supplier acceptance.
