ISO 15027-1:2012 specifies performance and safety requirements for constant wear immersion suits for work and leisure activities to protect the body of a user against the effects of cold water immersion, such as cold shock and hypothermia. It is applicable for dry and wet constant wear immersion suits. Abandonment suits are not covered by ISO 15027-1:2012. Requirements for abandonment suits are given in ISO 15027-2. Test methods for immersion suits are given in ISO 15027-3.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 15027-1:2012 defines performance and safety requirements for constant wear immersion suits used in work and leisure activities to protect users from the effects of cold water immersion (e.g., cold shock and hypothermia). It applies to both dry suits and wet suits designed for routine continuous wear on or near water. The standard sets minimum insulation, ergonomic and safety expectations so suits provide effective thermal protection, buoyancy and conspicuity while allowing normal activity. Note: abandonment suits are covered by ISO 15027-2 and test methods by ISO 15027-3.
Key Topics
- Scope and definitions: clarifies terms such as constant wear suit, dry/wet suit, buddy line, sprayhood, underclothing, cold shock and hypothermia.
- Thermal protection: minimum insulation requirements and guidance on expected thermal protection times in different water temperatures.
- Materials and components: requirements for exterior fabrics, inherent buoyant materials, foam flotation, and component durability.
- Buoyancy and flotation: use of inherent buoyant material and foam to assist survival and compatibility with lifejackets.
- Conspicuity and retro‑reflective materials: visibility requirements to aid detection and rescue.
- Ergonomics and health: basic health, comfort and freedom-of-movement requirements for routine wear.
- Safety features: buddy lines, sprayhoods, primary/secondary closures, gas/air inflation options and leakage resistance.
- Durability and performance testing: temperature cycling, rotating shock tests and other tests referenced to ISO 15027-3 to verify suit integrity and performance under simulated conditions.
- Marking and manufacturer information: mandatory marking, consumer information at point of sale and manufacturer-supplied technical data.
Applications
ISO 15027-1 is used by:
- Manufacturers and designers of immersion suits to develop compliant constant wear products.
- Purchasers and specifiers (offshore operators, maritime employers, helicopter operators) to select appropriate protective clothing.
- Regulators and inspectors who assess safety gear for work on or near water.
- Search & rescue and safety officers for evaluating suit suitability in operations. Practical uses include offshore personnel, small craft operators, helicopter transit suits and recreational users needing continuous protection against accidental immersion.
