This document specifies methods of operation and requirements related to manual (for example, hand-, finger-, foot-operated) controls as well as controls associated with virtual terminals intended for a seated operator. It applies to controls installed on agricultural tractors and self-propelled agricultural machinery. It also gives recommendations for the control actuating forces and torques, direction of motion and location of these manual controls. This document also specifies the minimum information relevant to manual controls to be provided in the operator's manual, for use as intended by the manufacturer.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 15077:2020 - "Tractors and self-propelled machinery for agriculture - Operator controls - Actuating forces, displacement, location and method of operation" specifies ergonomic, safety and identification requirements for manual operator controls (hand, finger, foot) and virtual terminal (VT) controls on agricultural tractors and self‑propelled machinery. The standard defines methods of operation, recommendations for actuating forces and torques, direction of motion, control location, and minimum operator manual information.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Applies to seated-operator controls on agricultural tractors and self‑propelled machinery, including recommendations for force, displacement and placement.
- Ergonomics & layout: Controls must be arranged so layout, travel and resistance match the intended action and human factors principles; inadvertent or incorrect actuation must be minimised.
- Identification: Functions and movements shall use symbols conforming to ISO 3767‑1 / ISO 3767‑2 or manufacturer-defined symbols when needed; all symbols must be explained in the operator’s manual. Annex C covers colour coding for hand controls.
- Foot controls: Designed to minimise foot slippage and positioned for ready access (e.g., engine speed foot control accessible to operator’s right foot).
- Actuating forces & torques: Annex A provides guidelines for minimum/typical actuating forces and torques, direction of motion and typical control locations. Minimum forces must prevent inadvertent actuation by a resting hand/foot.
- Control operation rules: Table 1 defines common control behaviours - e.g., engine start via clockwise rotation, stop via anticlockwise rotation; stop control must remain in stop position without sustained manual effort and be located within 150 mm of the engine start control. Requirements also address remote engine starting and hybrid power sources.
- Virtual terminal (VT) controls: Annex B and ISO 11783‑6 requirements for VT operator controls, distinguishing critical vs non‑critical VT functions and requiring means to prevent inadvertent operation.
Applications and who uses it
- OEMs and control designers: implement safe, ergonomic control layouts and select appropriate actuation forces.
- Human factors and safety engineers: evaluate control placement, travel and resistance to meet operator capability and reduce errors.
- Technical writers / service organisations: prepare operator manuals with required control identification and symbol explanations.
- Regulators and conformity assessors: use the standard as a benchmark for control safety on agricultural machinery.
- Aftermarket and accessory manufacturers: ensure add‑on controls and VT interfaces comply with identification and safety provisions.
