ISO 15143-1:2010 specifies system architecture for the exchange of data related to the use of earth‑moving machinery, as defined in ISO 6165, and mobile road construction machinery, as defined in ISO 22242 when used for work similar to earth-moving, in worksite data‑controlled construction operations. It also gives definitions of terms related to worksite data exchange. It covers only the application layer of the OSI reference model according to ISO/IEC 7498-1, and does not cover the presentation, session, transport, network, data link or physical layers of the model. Specific agreement (selection of applicable specifications, standards, etc.) relating to those layers will therefore be needed if data exchange is to be facilitated.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 15143-1:2010 - Earth-moving machinery and mobile road construction machinery: Worksite data exchange - Part 1: System architecture defines the application‑layer system architecture for exchanging worksite data between construction machines, measuring equipment and site information systems. It standardizes data concepts, terminology and a generalized schema needed to ensure interoperability in data‑controlled construction operations (earth‑moving and similar road construction work). ISO 15143-1 focuses on the application layer of the OSI model; lower layers (presentation, session, transport, network, data link, physical) must be agreed separately.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and terminology: precise definitions for machine, measurement and worksite data consistent with ISO 6165 and ISO 22242.
- Application‑layer architecture: a standardized framework for how mission data, measurement records, machine working records (productivity) and machine running records (health) are represented and exchanged.
- Generalized schema: conceptual data schema to describe worksite entities, messages and relationships (with diagrams and examples in informative annexes).
- Data exchange procedures: principles and procedures for transferring information between:
- contractor ↔ site information system,
- site information system ↔ construction machine,
- site information system ↔ measuring equipment.
- Scope limits: not intended for direct owner‑contractor project documentation exchange (though not excluded); includes real‑time status data but is not specifically a real‑time control protocol.
- Extensibility and data dictionary: supports creation and extension of a worksite data dictionary (see Part 2 - Data dictionary) and metadata registry best practices (ISO/IEC 11179 referenced).
Practical applications
- Enabling interoperable machine control and reporting across equipment brands on a worksite.
- Exchanging mission/target data (e.g., stakeless earthwork) from site systems to machines.
- Collecting measurement records and machine productivity/health data into site information systems for quality control and reporting.
- Supporting suppliers and system integrators who build scalable, portable worksite information systems that can move from project to project.
Who should use this standard
- Construction equipment manufacturers and telematics/controls engineers
- Measuring equipment and GNSS system vendors
- Site information system developers and integrators
- Contractors, site managers and fleet operators seeking vendor‑neutral data exchange
- Standards and compliance teams planning interoperable worksite IT
