This International Standard specifies a test method for determining the equilibrium concentration of formaldehyde from formaldehyde-emitting coatings and melamine foams in a small test chamber. It describes the determination of the equilibrium concentration of formaldehyde that is established in air at 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity. The test closely simulates practical conditions and can be performed on a laboratory scale. Good correlation is obtained with values obtained on samples of the same material in a 40 m3 test chamber. The method, which is simple to perform, is therefore suitable for the preliminary determination of limits that have to be adhered to.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 15234:1999 - Paints and varnishes: testing of formaldehyde‑emitting coatings and melamine foams - specifies a laboratory test method to determine the steady‑state (equilibrium) concentration of formaldehyde released from coatings and melamine foams in a small test chamber. The procedure reproduces practical conditions at 23 °C and 50% relative humidity and is intended for preliminary determination of emission limits. Results show good correlation with measurements from larger (40 m3) test chambers.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test environment: Air‑conditioned room maintained at (23 ±1) °C and (50 ±3) % RH.
- Small test chamber: Typical volume ~20 L (desiccator) with specimen rack; short, leak‑free tubing and controlled airflow.
- Specimen conditioning: Condition specimens at test climate (normally 28 days) before exposure; specific preparation procedures are provided for paints (Annex A) and melamine foam (Annex B).
- Steady‑state definition: Equilibrium formaldehyde concentration is reached when several successive hourly readings differ by less than 0.02 mg/m3.
- Air‑replacement and geometry metrics: Definitions and use of air‑replacement rate (n), relative specimen area (a), and steady‑state ratio (n/a) to standardize results and compare tests.
- Sampling and analysis: Air passing over specimens is bubbled through water traps; formaldehyde in the aqueous samples is quantified photometrically using the acetylacetone (Hantzsch) reaction with absorbance measured at 412 nm (preferred method). Other validated methods (e.g., fluorimetric) may be used if equivalent.
- Apparatus & reagents: Lists pumps, flowmeters, wash‑bottles, humidity bottle (saturated calcium nitrate), silica gel drying tower, spectrophotometer, and reagents (colour‑developer, formaldehyde standards).
- Methods A & B: Different wash‑bottle volumes and dilution factors for low (<0.15 mg/m3) vs high (>0.15 mg/m3) concentrations.
- Reporting: Requires at least three independent determinations and a detailed test report (conditioning, specimen area, airflow, method used, individual results, deviations).
Applications and users
Who uses ISO 15234:
- Paint, varnish and coating manufacturers for product development and quality control.
- Producers of melamine foams and composite panels assessing formaldehyde emissions.
- Accredited testing laboratories performing VOC/formaldehyde emission testing.
- Regulatory bodies, product safety assessors, and indoor‑air quality consultants establishing preliminary emission limits or screening materials before large‑scale chamber testing.
Practical benefits:
- Rapid, laboratory‑scale screening method that correlates with large‑chamber results.
- Helps set product emission limits and supports compliance testing for indoor air quality.
