ISO 15546:2011 specifies the technical delivery conditions, manufacturing process, material requirements, configuration and dimensions, and verification and inspection procedures for aluminium alloy drill pipes with or without attached steel tool joints, for use in drilling and production operations in the petroleum and natural gas industries. A typical drill pipe configuration is provided, showing main elements and lengths. The main dimensions and masses of the grades of drill pipe are given in both SI units and USC units. ISO 15546:2011 does not consider performance properties.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 15546:2011 (Aluminium alloy drill pipe)
ISO 15546:2011 is an international standard for aluminium alloy drill pipe used in the petroleum and natural gas industries. It specifies the technical delivery conditions, manufacturing process, material requirements, configuration and dimensions, and verification and inspection procedures for aluminium alloy drill pipe bodies with or without attached steel tool joints. The standard provides typical drill pipe configurations and gives the main dimensions and masses in both SI units and USC units. Note: ISO 15546:2011 does not address drill pipe performance properties.
Key technical topics and requirements
The standard covers practical, factory-acceptance and documentation topics that ensure consistent, interchangeable product supply:
- Manufacturing and delivery conditions
- Extrusion-based production of aluminium alloy pipe bodies
- Heat treatment, delivery condition and traceability requirements
- Material and metallurgical requirements
- Material groups, metallographic examination and chemical composition checks
- Requirements for attached steel tool joints and body-tool joint assemblies
- Configuration, dimensions and mass
- Typical drill pipe configuration and main element lengths
- Detailed dimensions, design mass, upset run-out, straightness, ovality, eccentricity and drift
- Dimension tables provided in SI (body) and USC (Annex A)
- Testing and inspection
- Chemical composition, mechanical testing, hydrostatic tests and corrosion testing
- Non‑destructive inspection (NDE) levels, tool joint NDE and measuring/calibration methods
- Marking, packaging and documentation
- Manufacturer marking, traceability marking, paint stencilling, packaging, transport and storage
- Certificate of compliance and record retention requirements
- Annexes and supplementary procedures
- Fatigue test procedure and analysis (supplementary), corrosion test details, purchaser inspection options, unit conversion guidance
Practical applications - who uses ISO 15546:2011
ISO 15546:2011 is used by organizations involved in drilling equipment supply and operations:
- Drill pipe manufacturers - to design, produce and certify aluminium alloy drill pipe that meet international delivery and inspection norms.
- Procurement and QA/QC teams - to specify purchase orders, acceptance criteria, and supplier audits.
- Drilling contractors and operators - for selecting compatible drill pipe assemblies and ensuring interchangeability with tooling.
- Inspection and testing laboratories - to perform required chemical, mechanical, hydrostatic, corrosion and NDE checks.
- Engineers and technical consultants - for installation guidelines, material selection and interface checks with steel tool joints.
Benefits include consistent product quality, traceability, clear dimensional interchangeability (SI/USC), and standardized inspection and marking practices.
