This document specifies requirements and gives recommendations for the pre-installation surveys, design, materials, equipment, installation, commissioning, operation, inspection, and maintenance of cathodic protection systems for the external surface of on-land pipelines. This document is applicable to on-land pipelines and piping systems used in other industries and transporting other media such as industrial gases, waters, or slurries. Throughout this document, on-land pipelines mean: pipelines that are buried; landfalls of offshore pipeline sections protected by onshore based cathodic protection installations; immersed sections of on-land pipelines such as river or lake crossings. This document is applicable to pipelines of carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, galvanized steel, and copper. This document does not apply to pipelines made of reinforced concrete (see ISO 12696).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 15589-1:2026 sets internationally recognized requirements and recommendations for the cathodic protection of on-land pipeline transportation systems. Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), this standard applies to pipelines used in oil and gas industries as well as other sectors transporting industrial gases, water, or slurries. The focus is on cathodic protection systems designed for the external surfaces of buried or immersed pipelines, including river or lake crossings and offshore landfall sections protected by onshore cathodic installations.
The standard is applicable to pipelines made of carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, galvanized steel, and copper, but not reinforced concrete, which is covered under ISO 12696. ISO 15589-1:2026 is an essential reference for ensuring corrosion control, pipeline integrity, and safe operation across diverse pipeline networks, fully aligning with modern low-carbon and lower environmental impact energy solutions.
Key Topics
ISO 15589-1:2026 addresses the following core aspects of on-land pipeline cathodic protection:
- Pre-installation Surveys: Guidelines on conducting environmental and structural assessments before designing cathodic protection systems.
- System Design: Requirements for designing effective cathodic protection systems suited to different pipeline materials and environments.
- Materials and Equipment: Recommendations for selecting appropriate anodes, power supplies, cables, coatings, and isolation materials.
- Installation and Commissioning: Best practices for installing and initializing both impressed current and galvanic anode systems.
- Operation and Monitoring: Procedures for continuous and periodic monitoring of protection effectiveness, including use of test stations and measuring equipment.
- Inspection and Maintenance: Inspection intervals, remote monitoring capabilities, maintenance workflows, and troubleshooting guidelines.
- Documentation: Proper recording of design, installation, commissioning, and maintenance activities for transparent lifecycle management.
Applications
The requirements of ISO 15589-1:2026 are vital for organizations seeking to maximize pipeline longevity and minimize operational risks associated with external corrosion. The standard applies to:
- Oil and gas pipelines: Safeguarding critical infrastructure transporting hydrocarbons.
- Water and industrial gas pipelines: Ensuring secure and reliable flow of non-hydrocarbon products.
- Cross-sectoral uses: Pipelines conveying slurries or similar materials in industrial environments.
- Buried and submerged sections: Protection strategies for pipelines under challenging environments such as river or lake beds.
- Pipeline upgrades and new installations: Adopting globally consistent best practices for both new infrastructure and retrofitting existing pipelines.
By following ISO 15589-1, operators improve asset integrity, comply with international best practices, and reduce environmental impact through proactive corrosion management.
