Abstract
Overview
ISO 15592-2:2001 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) under Technical Committee ISO/TC 126, which focuses on tobacco and tobacco products. This standard specifically addresses the atmosphere requirements for conditioning and testing fine-cut tobacco and smoking articles made from it. As part 2 of the broader ISO 15592 series, this document sets precise parameters for the conditioning environment-namely temperature, relative humidity, and pressure-ensuring reliable and reproducible testing conditions for fine-cut tobacco products.
Unlike ISO 3402, which applies to leaf tobacco and tobacco used in manufacturing cigarettes, ISO 15592-2 is tailored for fine-cut tobacco, which has higher moisture content. This makes it essential for laboratories and manufacturers seeking standardized and consistent results in the analysis, quality control, and research of fine-cut tobacco and related smoking articles.
Key Topics
-
Conditioning Atmosphere
- Temperature: (22 ± 2) °C
- Relative Humidity: (75 ± 3)%
- Pressure: 86 kPa to 106 kPa (to be recorded if outside this range)
- Ensures that samples reach equilibrium moisture content for accurate testing
-
Test Atmosphere
- Temperature: (22 ± 2) °C
- Relative Humidity: (60 ± 5)%
- Defines the environment maintained throughout the testing process
-
Conditioning Procedures
- Conditioning duration typically 72 hours with forced airflow
- Maximum storage in conditioning cabinets is 10 days to avoid loss of volatile compounds
- Equilibrium achieved when mass variation < 0.2% over 3 hours or humidity reaches equivalence with the conditioning atmosphere
-
Sample Preparation and Handling
- Fine-cut tobacco layers must not exceed 20 mm depth for proper conditioning
- Samples should be teased apart for air exposure when taken from packaging
- Fine-cut smoking articles conditioned in single layers on perforated trays with proper air circulation
-
Validation and Monitoring
- Use of calibrated hygrometers and thermometers to verify atmosphere conditions
- Alternative conditioning methods using saturated salt solutions for humidity control when electronic cabinets are unavailable
- Regular mass monitoring of tobacco samples as a secondary standard to verify conditioning environment stability
Applications
ISO 15592-2:2001 is vital for tobacco manufacturers, quality control labs, and research institutions involved with fine-cut tobacco products and smoking articles. Practical applications include:
-
Quality Control Testing
Ensuring that fine-cut tobacco samples and smoking articles are conditioned under standardized atmospheres before chemical and physical property analysis for consistent results. -
Product Development and Research
Providing consistent environmental conditions to evaluate new blends, smoking articles, and effects of additives or materials on tobacco properties. -
Regulatory Compliance
Supporting compliance with international testing standards for tobacco products to meet legal and trade requirements. -
Material Testing
Conditioning wrappers and components of fine-cut smoking articles to determine their behavior under controlled humidity and temperature.
This standard improves comparability of data across different labs and products by standardizing pre-test conditioning, critical for accurate nicotine, moisture, and particulate matter analysis.
