ISO 15616-1:2003 is applicable to CO2-laser beam machines for welding and cutting in two operating directions. The main purpose of this International Standard is to provide requirements for acceptance testing of CO2-laser beam machines prior to or during installation at the user's premises. The acceptance tests are used to document the ability of CO2-laser beam machines to produce welded joints and cuts of consistent quality. ISO 15616-1:2003 is intended to be used for preparation of the technical specification for CO2-laser beam machines for high quality welding and cutting in two operating directions. It specifies basic requirements. However, this International Standard may also be used for testing as part of maintenance, as appropriate.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 15616-1:2003 - Acceptance tests for CO2-laser beam machines for high quality welding and cutting (Part 1: General principles, acceptance conditions) defines the general principles and acceptance conditions for CO2-laser beam machines used for 2D welding and cutting. It is intended for acceptance testing prior to or during installation at the user's premises and can also be applied to maintenance testing. The standard helps document a machine’s ability to produce consistent high‑quality welded joints and cuts and to form the basis of technical specifications and contractual acceptance criteria.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope and purpose: Applies to CO2-laser beam machines operating in two directions (2D) for high‑quality welding and cutting; specifies basic acceptance requirements and test documentation.
- Installation and environment: Machines must be installed to avoid disturbances (vibration, temperature swings, contamination) and follow manufacturer setup instructions.
- Power, cooling and gas supply: Requirements for stable mains supply (±10% voltage fluctuation guidance), cooling system performance and safety cut‑outs, and specified purity/conditions for laser and working gases.
- Acceptance test principles: Defines the range of system settings to be specified in technical specs (laser power, focal length, motion system, speeds, working gas type/flow, nozzle geometry, etc.).
- Limit deviations (examples): Typical acceptance tolerances provided include:
- Maximum laser power: +5% / −2%
- Minimum laser power: +10% / −3%
- Medium‑term stability: ±5%; long‑term stability: ±2%
- Repeatability: ±2%
- Focused beam waist diameter: ±0.1 mm
- Welding/cutting speed short‑term stability: v_max ±2%; at 0.1 v_max ±5%
- Working gas flow/pressure: ±10%
- Precision levels: Defines precision classes A–D (A = special high precision, D = heavy industry) with example positioning tolerances (e.g., unidirectional repeatability from 0.01 mm in A to 0.2 mm in D).
- Test documentation: All measurements must be recorded; an acceptance report must summarize test results and any additional test program items.
Applications and Who Uses It
- Manufacturers and system integrators: to prepare technical specifications and verify delivered machine performance.
- Purchasers and end users: to define acceptance criteria in contracts and to confirm machine capability during installation.
- Quality, test and maintenance engineers: to perform acceptance tests, periodic verification after repairs or relocation, and to produce acceptance reports.
- Procurement and compliance teams: to ensure contractual conformity and consistent production quality.
